As some members expressed certain curiosity as to how other nations understand and imagine Jeeves, I decided to suply your respectable melons with information of how it is in Czech.

Who is Saturnin? )

Well, I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on this lovely little fandom: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: What ho, Gods of the Abyss!
What I wasn't sure of was whether or not anyone had linked the ability to read it for free to the comm. And so I do this now as my daily act of possibly unnecisarry charity. Because an act of necissary charity would be considered living beyond my means. My bad if it's already linked but I couldn't be bothered to check.
*steals back into the night* Enjoy!

Edited to include the fact that Jeeves giving Bertie the heimlich manoeuver is most amusing. My way of saying "I highly recommend this".

Yuletide!

Yuletide 2009 opened on Christmas, and there are J&W fics!

Please check warnings and the headers before reading, as some are explicit and some aren't and one even has Bertie/Florence Craye in it! (See A Curve to Set Things Straight for that one)

I link:

Bertram and Bunnies - There's something loose in Bertie's bedroom...

Of Oranges and the English Countryside - Bertram Wooster discovers drawing, Jeeves suggests a countryside trip for better drawing subjects, and unpleasantness occurs.

The Threat - Jeeves is forced to re-evaluate his relationship with his employer.

Christmas Dilemma - Bertie wants to go to Brinkley Court for Christmas, but how to get out of working as editor/publisher of My Lady's Boudoir? Can Jeeves save him.

Oh, Jeeves! - Bertie finds himself in the soup with Jeeves.

Ever After, What? - 'None may pass through this wood without answering my riddles three!' she declared, with admirable voice projection. 'Answer correctly, and you will be granted a prize beyond measure. Answer wrongly, and DOOM awaits you.'

A Curve to Set Things Straight - Bertie was amazed, not for the first time, at how little overall disruption the
permanent addition of Florence Craye had made in his life.

To conclude: Yuletide 2009 has been awesome. I highly rec Ever After, What? as sheer brilliance, but really, try them all. I'm biased for my rec, cause it was written for me.

Enjoy!

So I was wondering, given the spate of "I'm looking for this one fic" or "rec something" posts lately, that maybe we, as a community, could have a sort of fic potluck (h/t [livejournal.com profile] yaspis for the idea) where you (or anyone who wants to join in) could post a link or two to a fic that you feel deserves some attention or is one you happened to re-read recently or had a particular scene that you enjoyed--with a couple of notes explaining why you're--to extend the metaphor--bringing the fic to the party. It's not necessarily that you'd have to link to your OMG favorite fic of all time or anything, and you may decide to link one of your own fics, but it could be anything. So, um, anyone think it's a good idea?

Okay, I feel evil just asking this, but... Does anyone know about any QI fic? I was watching the B series (yuzz, got it on DVD) today, and I just couldn't get the thought out of my head that Stephen and Alan Davies would be sooo adorable...

Fine, I'm ashamed just asking. But no insult is intended; just pornage. Any tips/pimpage would be welcomed!

This is a first post, so hullo to everyone!

This summer I'll be working with a theater company performing Anything Goes. My mother is doing the costumes, and as SM I'm helping her.

What I'm wondering is, does anyone know the best Jeeves and Wooster episodes for 20s costumes? (We're using this as an excuse to rewatch some old episodes)

Thanks is advance!

What ho all!

I just finished reading Ring for Jeeves, the Bertie-less novel Wodehouse wrote, and I'm wondering if the community would like a bit of information about it. I'm asking this because I suspect a lot of people in this community might not have looked over this book yet. I put off reading this one for the longest time, and only read it now because, as Jeeves might say, faute de mieux, or 'for want of anything better'. When you've read everything else, Ring for Jeeves seemed better than nothing.

I'll describe it very briefly.

This is the novel that is set post WW2, in which Jeeves is in the employ of Lord Rowcester. It's not really the joy to read that all the Bertie/Jeeves stories are, but it does have the odd laugh-out-loud moment.

Apart from the lack of Bertie, the big difference is that Jeeves is sort of the main character. At least, much closer to being the main character than he's ever been before. He's much more - I was going to say, 'developed', but that would imply that I don't think he's developed in the Bertie novels, and that wouldn't be true. I suppose the word is 'prominent'. His character is much more prominent. We're allowed to see what he's thinking once in a while, and Wodehouse devotes entire paragraphs to describing his mannerisms and actions as a means of demonstrating his aloof professionalism. And being more in the limelight, a lot of the novel's humour actually comes directly from Jeeves.

I suspect that, because the novel's not written in the first person, and because Wodehouse knew it was likely his last Jeeves novel, he allows himself to really show his personal love of the character. The description of Jeeves's first appearance is almost adulatory. In a way, I'd say he gets a bit carried away, and portrays Jeeves as being a bit more perfect than he really is, i.e. how he is in the Bertie stories. Jeeves is more selfless in his anxiety to serve, and he is also more colourful in expressing himself, less reserved. He is virtually the partner of his employer, barely subservient at all.

I'd recommend this novel for anyone wanting to see Jeeves in sharper focus than he can be seen through the Bertie stories. He might appear just a touch out of character, but I imagine those fic writers in the community would find it rather inspirational. Jeeves is a hard character to write!

Bertie Wooster is not present in the novel, but he is mentioned more than once - more than twice, in fact. These few mentions are somewhat slashy, I have to say, or at any rate, rather sweet. If anyone likes, I would be happy to transcribe the mentions of Bertie for the benefit of this community. Would that be welcome/appropriate? Let me know.

A post about how to pack a Gentleman's Suitcase

But check out the whole thing!

Hello! I've just recently started to get into the fandom. I'm a bit obsessed and have been devouring everything I can find. I love this community and I hope to produce something for it soon enough.

I hate to be this person, and I hope no one minds, but I actually was wondering if anyone had any recs for h/c fics? I've found a few, but nothing much, I've quite a jonesing. Particularly anything with Bertie being the hurt one, but I'll taken anything. Any length, genre, what have you.

Thanks in advance!

What ho all!! I am feeling very much in the Christmas spirit! I've had some hot cocoa, had some christmas cookies, and was wondering if any of you fine people could recommend some Christmas Jooster to make my holiday even jollier:) I seem to recall one that was sort of a "It's a Wonderful Life" parody where Bertie somehow ends up wishing he had never been born, but i can't think of what it was called. Thanks all. Happy Christmas to all you wonderful people, I am always thankful to have all you wonderful Wodehouse fans to brighten my days. May your holiday be as filled with fattening foods and booze as you should like it to be:)

I've been dying for some time to rec [livejournal.com profile] dark_eyed_seer's fanfiction to this community but I wanted to wait until I had permission, first. Now that I do, I'm all a-quiver. Where to start? I don't want to prattle on for too long and cause a case of tl;dr, so I'll try and keep this short and to the point.

In Jooster-land, if anyone remembers the spooky-and-pre-slashy Bedlam, it now has a (slightly more cheerful, but still kinda scary) sequel: Ether.

Secondly, she's branched out into Kingdom (I KNOW--Kingdom!) slash, pairing Peter with an OC based on... well, it rhymes with "clue." It's called Medicine Man.

And last but not least, some bittersweet and oddly domestic Mr. Burmie fic. I don't want to ruin the plot, but I'm sure that by now you can see there's a bit of a theme going.

What ho! Thought I'd let all you eggs, beans and crumpets know I've been tapped to rec J&W for the month of May over at [livejournal.com profile] crack_van. Which, if you don't know it already, is a singularly fabulous multifandom rec site. [livejournal.com profile] sine_que_non767 recced previously, and also wrote a lovely overview; you can read all recced stories so far by clicking on the Jeeves & Wooster tag. I'll be doing my best to provide a mix of new and old, obscure and well-beloved, cracked out and...well, only somewhat silly. (This being Wodefic, and all.)

Hope you'll drop by!

Drachenmina wrote The crux of the matter, a Jeeves and Wooster/Harry Potter crossover. It's short, what with being a drabble and all, but very funny. :D

Hello all!  This is my first time delurking enough to actually post, but I've commented on a few fics so you might recognize my name.

I'm actually coming to announce that this week is Jeeves and Wooster week over at my fic rec community, [community profile] epic_recs.   This means at least one J&W fic review per day, and at the end of the week ya'll will have the opportunity to reccommend some fics to me that I might have missed.  Chances are that you'll have already read the fic I'm reccing (the downside to a small fandom), but hopefully the reviews will provide something to entertain.

As a side note, Jeeves and Wooster is by far the most well-represented small fandom on Epic Recs (it's also the only one getting its own rec week), with reviews being posted every couple of weeks.  More reviews can be found here.

(PS: don't feel like you need to wait till the end of the week to suggest fic.  I'm always looking to increase my potential reccing pool.)

Rec me!

hi there,

i saw that the issue of DVD regions has reared its ugly head again. since this question seems to come up on every LJ comm and mailing list i'm on, i figured there would be quite a few people here who can use this information. please note this applies to DVD drives (i.e. in computers) only, not DVD players.

there is a program called DVD Region Free and what it does is make your computer bypass the programming the DVD drive uses to check the region of the disk you're playing. the upshot is that you never have to change the region on your DVD drive. since most DVD drives will only allow you to change region 5 times - and then 'locks' the drive on whatever region it's set to - this is one of the most useful programs on the planet. especially if, like me, you're in a region where many DVDs are sold at grossly inflated prices and you have to buy most of your DVDs from amazon.com or face bankruptcy. and that's only a slight exaggeration.

you can download the trial version here. it costs $39.95 US to buy. there is a Lite version which has less functionality for $24.95 and should be enough for most DVDs, tho maybe not the Sony protected ones. anyway, you coud use the trial period to check it out.

ETA: see the comments for info about VLC which not only does the same thing, but is available free.

Because we've got a lot of new members, lately (what's up with that?) I repost my collection of fic posted or recced on Indeedsir.  It's not all of everything ever recced or posted, because I got lazy in the past year.  If someone has the more recent stuff linked, that would be great.
