I did sketches of all the young ladies (even the ones who rarely get drawn, like Rosie and Corky), but then I saw that they were too generically pretty and even with their individual features they still all still looked too much the same somehow. That's boring for me. Bertie, why didn't you hang out with more plain/odd-featured women? I still plan to draw the ladies, but I want to make their appearances a bit more unique and distinctive first, so that will have to wait a while.
Until then, have some Jooster.
First a scene from "Right Ho, Jeeves". Jeeves discovers the mess jacket, and he is not pleased. I usually ink first, then color, but this time I did most of the coloring first, with minimal cleanup, which is why it's less precise than usual.

It's usually taken for granted that Jeeves is taller than Bertie, but I've been thinking about it for a while now and based on what meagre evidence there is* I'm starting to think Bertie may be the taller one. So I decided to experiment with that for these next two pics. I'm really liking it. :)
*Bertie describes himself as tall, but says Jeeves is "tallish". Jeeves is referred to as tall in "Ring for Jeeves", but that's in a general sense, not in comparison to Bertie in particular.

Date: 2012-02-01 12:29 am (UTC)Yeah, I think Fry and Laurie skewed some of our personal perceptions of their heights being that they are 6'4" and 6'2" respectively.
But I've always imagined Jeeves to be stout; not in a portly fashion but far more Vitruvian and evenly distributed, whereas Bertie makes me think of a scarecrow that never got his brains.

Date: 2012-02-01 03:37 am (UTC)I can imagine anything from a relatively slender frame for Jeeves (though not as much as Bertie) to something a bit - like you said - Vitruvian. I can't really decide which feels most right to me.

Date: 2012-02-01 01:44 am (UTC)I got a question too, if I may. Do you draw straight away om tablet or do you draw on paper first and scan it. Ergo, how do you do art?
no subject
Date: 2012-02-01 03:50 am (UTC)I do both. Generally I work out the basic composition and perspective on paper first. Depending on how complex a picture's going to be, I'll sometimes draw the whole thing on paper first. I don't have a scanner, and I would take a picture with my camera but the battery's dead and I keep forgetting to recharge it. So I just copy it by sight. And then (like I did with the 2nd and 3rd pictures) I go over the finished drawing on another layer two or more times trying to simplify it.

Date: 2012-02-01 02:31 am (UTC)As always, it's a treat to see your art. Are you doing the color in Photoshop or Painter? I've always done painterly things by hand, so I'm curious because I've always wanted to branch out a bit.
Bertie with wet hair is adorable!

Date: 2012-02-01 04:07 am (UTC)I agree. I tend to see them as pretty close in height, regardless of who's the taller one. For myself, I'm starting to prefer shorter Jeeves. I can't say exactly why, but it sort of gives an added sweetness to the pairing for me. :)
I'm coloring in Photoshop Elements, which was included with the tablet. It's fine for coloring, but a big problem with it is that it has a really shitty blender. GIMP's is better, but my tablet won't work with it.
Thank you!

Date: 2012-02-01 05:08 am (UTC)I think I like the first drawing best. Jeeves' expression is priceless.
And Kudos on wanting to make the women all distinctive. I think there's a tendency to lump them all together. But you'll have to give Florence a marvelous profile!

Date: 2012-02-01 06:08 am (UTC)I think the problem with the women is not just that they're all traditionally pretty (well, you could argue about Honoria and Emerald, but they're hardly unattractive either). It's that the period makeup and hairstyles conceal their individuality somewhat. I'm half tempted to just show them all right after they've got up in the morning.
I don't know if I can do Florence's profile justice!

Date: 2012-02-01 09:33 am (UTC)Looking at you pictures again, I'm now wondering about their hair color. Is there canon evidence that B is fairer than J?
Anyway great job, and I am such a pervert that I'll add I like the nudity (and the 'I'm Jeeves and I'm keeping my eyes on his face dammit') in the last image. The contrast between Bertie's smooth chest and the rich red damask in Jeeves' hands is just HOT.

Date: 2012-02-01 07:09 pm (UTC)I prefer him taller because I just love him towering (well inching) over Bertie. Valets in general stand often in the background and I've always seen Jeeves as more superior as Bertie in a way, even though he's master, and I guess that's why I prefer him taller. And I just like very tall men.
But I can see why you might tend to like Bertie on the taller side, Jeeves is certainly more broadly built than he is.
Anyways, love the first one! Jeeves' expression is dripping with disdain!
Love the others too, it's certainly interesting to see Bertie looking down and Jeeves looking up for once ;)

Date: 2012-02-01 09:22 pm (UTC)All three pictures are truly marvelous, but, oh, the second one! Adorable. An almost kiss, so tender, the colors so warm and dreamy glowing. Creating such a caring, seductive atmosphere with only a few lines - great!
As for the last one,: pretty eye lock ;) Are they playing the eyesex-without-any-touch-thing? Whoever reaches out first is the receiving part tonight? XD (Also, the red gown reminds me strongly of a toreador rag...)
My two cent re Jeeves' high: Since I've started with the show and only afterwards rushed to the library to pick up the origin novels, I'm highly prejudiced... on the other hand, now that I'm seeing your arts, the idea sure has its charm. A bit odd (in a good sense) but still quite possible. In my inner J&W-verse Jeeves is still the taller one, I'm afraid, but in your arts it looks absolutely believable o.o"
Also, the ladies needs some love! I'm especially curious to see your versions of Honoria, being my favorite one among the wide assortment of his fiancées. And maybe Pauline. And Angela, though, I don't like her at all. And what about Aunt Dalia? As a lovely young girl with a hunting rifle? :)

Date: 2012-02-01 10:40 pm (UTC)Oh, he'll be seeing plenty of disapproval later.
The third one - yeah, it's basically flirty eyesex, but I haven't decided whether or not they're a couple yet in that picture. I'll leave it up to the viewer's discretion. ;)
I'm glad you find it believable despite your preferences. Canon's vagueness with Jeeves & Bertie's physical descriptions can be a pain sometimes, but I do like that it also allows for a variety of interpretations.
My sketch collection of the ladies had Florence, Bobbie, Madeline, Stiffy, Corky, Angela, Emerald, Honoria, Rosie, Nobby, and Pauline. I was going to stick with the ladies of Bertie's own generation, but I'll consider doing young Dahlia and Agatha as well. In the meantime, have you seen

Date: 2012-02-04 10:29 pm (UTC)I also tend to imagine Jeeves being a bit shorter, since Bertie's descriptions of himself do tend to give the impression that he is taller than just about everyone else around him. (When someone taller does show up, we get the classic Bertie hyperbole: "He was about 8 feet tall" etc.)
Another thing I like about these is that you have made Jeeves a bit swarthy.
I'm looking forward to seeing the ladies! (And I also have the problem of thinking of all of them in terms of generic '20s-'30s beauty, although at least Emerald is canonically a little funny-looking.)

Date: 2012-02-04 11:53 pm (UTC)Bertie says Jeeves is darkish, and I imagine him having some Celtic blood. I've read that people who do can have dark/Mediterranean complexions, so I try to go for that with Jeeves.
The ladies should be up soonish. I resketched them all last night (on paper) and I'm much more satisfied with their looks. Now I just need to ink them in PS.
