Wow, I've been trained to twitch when Jeeves is referred to as a butler.

Heh...if we're doing accidental innuendos in articles, this one made me choke on my coffee:

"And so Jeeves dutifully awaits his master's beck and call from wherever it might come - the back of Wooster's car, his bed, his club, a country estate of one of his school chums."

....really, was it *necessary* to have the first two places be the bed and the backseat of the car? *laugh*

I'm afraid I don't think I quite understand what the difference is between a butler and a valet. I know they are supposed to be some substantial dissimilarities in their duties, but never really knew what they were exactly.

Hah! Oh, I'd actually read that one and read right over it. I feel horribly bad now, skipping over slash. 'The back of Wooster's car'. Rawr! Thanks for quoting it back. ;)

I love that article, though. Simply for Hugh and Stephen's quotes. *twirls happily* It's true, they could hardly have found anyone better for the parts. Not to mention I've a soft spot for best-friend-actors who do buddy parts every now and then. Extra points credited for being funny as hell, and extra extra points being credited to Hugh for being as musical as he is... I might give Stephen his extra extras later on. I'm going to start reading 'Making History' tonight. (Was going to start it earlier, but Wildian poetry demanded my attention. Damn him for writing about Pan. He should know I can't resist that. *shakes fist at dead people who should know better than to write books that would still be read ages lates*)

The way I understand it, a butler is the head of the rest of the household staff (if you have any) and he manages the household generally -- arranging social calendars, manning the door, and whatnot. Whereas a valet is the sort of servant that one takes on trips -- he lays out your clothes, draws your bathwater, personal servant stuff.

At least that's what I think it is. I've probably got it dead wrong, of course, and I don't suppose it makes all that much of a difference when you've only got one servant to begin with.

It was a pretty good article -- though I think a proper fellow like Jeeves would eschew the backseat of a car for such activities. Rather vulgar, I thought.

Helen and Nikki kissing in Bad Girls prompted this:

I took that to mean that it's unrealistic that a show about a women's prison has a lesbian relationship in it.

There's something about the amicable master-servant relationship that seems to be inherently slashable, I guess.

And...yes, like when you were three, but Bertie is what? In his twenties? Bit of a difference, what? *grin* I don't think I've ever really broached the slash subject with the folks, but I'm sure they've heard me talking about it on the phone or summat. They'd probably just sort of be like "Huh. Interesting. Well, carry on then." Considering that's how they reacted when I told them *I* was gay, I doubt they'd be any more phased by the fact that I enjoy reading and speculating about characters from books and TV shows and whatnot engaged in extra-canonical affairs. ^_~

Funny, non-slashers who can readily see the Sam/Frodo point seem to have a hard time grasping the idea of Jeeves/Wooster. Hm.

Bweep. Oh, and about femmeslashing PotC, I think it was hyel who put the idea in my head first. I just took it and ran with it.

I read a Jeeves and Wooster story that femmeslashed Bobbie Wickham and Stiffy Byng. I actually exclaimed something along the lines of "That is so... believable!", simply because their personalities matched so well... I should reread that story.

I think people are used to Frodo and Sam being slashed. J/W falls more into the category of "is nothing sacred". Which, of course, it isn't. Heh. And the whole problem is probably Jeeves. You can imagine Sam saying bye-bye to propriety and do things like cradle Frodo's body and whatnot, but there's nothing in the books to suggest that Reggie would have once had any inclination to do so much as hold Bertie's hand or lay a hand on his shoulder.

I think I read that one in the fic-a-thon that your post inspired. Whee.

Heh, the way I see it, Jeeves's impassive character makes extremely subtle moments of emotion stand out sharply. If any other character had commented that he had come "very near to melting" in those circumstances, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but hearing JEEVES think it...it stands out like a bolt of lightening.
