Aug. 13th, 2004 05:36 pmOh, how these reviews amuse me...
"Based on the well-loved novels of P.G. (Pelham Grenville) Wodehouse, this British series featuring Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie, chronicles the misadventures (romantic and otherwise) of the impeccably dressed Bertie Wooster and his trusty and sagacious butler, Jeeves. "
Am I the only one who read this as "romantic and otherwise adventures between Jeeves and Bertie"?
I found a Belgian Drones Club... omgsquee.

Date: 2004-08-13 08:30 pm (UTC)Heh...if we're doing accidental innuendos in articles, this one made me choke on my coffee:
"And so Jeeves dutifully awaits his master's beck and call from wherever it might come - the back of Wooster's car, his bed, his club, a country estate of one of his school chums."
....really, was it *necessary* to have the first two places be the bed and the backseat of the car? *laugh*
The whole thing is here (http://www.hatsharpening.com/j&w/mtbook.php). It has some delectable quotes.

Date: 2004-08-13 09:16 pm (UTC)Hah! Oh, I'd actually read that one and read right over it. I feel horribly bad now, skipping over slash. 'The back of Wooster's car'. Rawr! Thanks for quoting it back. ;)
I love that article, though. Simply for Hugh and Stephen's quotes. *twirls happily* It's true, they could hardly have found anyone better for the parts. Not to mention I've a soft spot for best-friend-actors who do buddy parts every now and then. Extra points credited for being funny as hell, and extra extra points being credited to Hugh for being as musical as he is... I might give Stephen his extra extras later on. I'm going to start reading 'Making History' tonight. (Was going to start it earlier, but Wildian poetry demanded my attention. Damn him for writing about Pan. He should know I can't resist that. *shakes fist at dead people who should know better than to write books that would still be read ages lates*)
I'm babbling, aren't I? Ignore it. I just took a little nap and tend to be gabby when I just wake up. *makes coffee*

Date: 2004-08-14 12:02 am (UTC)At least that's what I think it is. I've probably got it dead wrong, of course, and I don't suppose it makes all that much of a difference when you've only got one servant to begin with.
It was a pretty good article -- though I think a proper fellow like Jeeves would eschew the backseat of a car for such activities. Rather vulgar, I thought.
Sorry about the double-post, Simon did something weird. :/

Date: 2004-08-14 09:34 am (UTC)Thanks for the explanation. I'd been wondering for a while now and have been entirely too lazy to look it up.
You think Jeeves would eschew the backseat? Aw, you're ruining at least five perfectly good fantasies here. *G*

Date: 2004-08-14 09:36 pm (UTC)But far be it from me to stand in the way of your perfectly good fantasies -- dream away ^_^ Though judging by the period cars I've seen, engaging in any 'romantic athletics' in the backseat of one of them would require quite a bit of dexterity...

Date: 2004-08-14 09:46 am (UTC)This is what happened with me:
Mom: What are you reading?
Me: Jeeves and Wooster.
Mom: Again?
Me: Well, it's funny as hell and there's slash to be found, of course.
Mom: Between master and valet?
Me: Yes.
Mom: And before that it was LotR with master and gardener?
Me: Yes.
Mom: PotC with mistress and lady's maid?
Me: Uh huh.
Mom: Household staff is really never safe around you, is it?
Me: ^.^; Not really. But Jeeves puts Bertie to bed and sat next to him while he was bathing and Bertie is utterly helpless without him and...
Mom: Like you and me when you were three?
Me: O.o! Do you want me to slash us two?
I love my mom, she's mental.

Date: 2004-08-14 10:19 am (UTC)Mine sort of rolled into it by all the remarks I was making on LotR at the time. Just try to avoid the "so, really it's gay pornography?" question.

Date: 2004-08-14 01:45 pm (UTC)Mom (prompted by something on TV: "I don't understand how anyone could be attracted to someone of his own gender. I mean, if I was a man, I just can't imagine it."
Me: "Well, you're attracted to them now, aren't you?"
Mom: "Yes, but I'm a woman."
Helen and Nikki kissing in Bad Girls prompted this:
Mom: "I don't like it how... these British shows... make it look like it's... fifty-fifty, you know?"
I took that to mean that it's unrealistic that a show about a women's prison has a lesbian relationship in it.
*rolls her eyes* AND she's against kink. She says sex is natural and okay, as long as it's not kinky.
This might not be the place to talk about this, but...

Date: 2004-08-14 09:50 pm (UTC)There's something about the amicable master-servant relationship that seems to be inherently slashable, I guess.
And...yes, like when you were three, but Bertie is what? In his twenties? Bit of a difference, what? *grin* I don't think I've ever really broached the slash subject with the folks, but I'm sure they've heard me talking about it on the phone or summat. They'd probably just sort of be like "Huh. Interesting. Well, carry on then." Considering that's how they reacted when I told them *I* was gay, I doubt they'd be any more phased by the fact that I enjoy reading and speculating about characters from books and TV shows and whatnot engaged in extra-canonical affairs. ^_~
Funny, non-slashers who can readily see the Sam/Frodo point seem to have a hard time grasping the idea of Jeeves/Wooster. Hm.

From:Answering again now that I'm awake.
Date: 2004-08-15 09:51 am (UTC)I read a Jeeves and Wooster story that femmeslashed Bobbie Wickham and Stiffy Byng. I actually exclaimed something along the lines of "That is so... believable!", simply because their personalities matched so well... I should reread that story.
I think people are used to Frodo and Sam being slashed. J/W falls more into the category of "is nothing sacred". Which, of course, it isn't. Heh. And the whole problem is probably Jeeves. You can imagine Sam saying bye-bye to propriety and do things like cradle Frodo's body and whatnot, but there's nothing in the books to suggest that Reggie would have once had any inclination to do so much as hold Bertie's hand or lay a hand on his shoulder.
Re: Answering again now that I'm awake.
Date: 2004-08-15 06:28 pm (UTC)Heh, the way I see it, Jeeves's impassive character makes extremely subtle moments of emotion stand out sharply. If any other character had commented that he had come "very near to melting" in those circumstances, I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but hearing JEEVES think it...it stands out like a bolt of lightening.
Posting early again. Should probably quit this. ^^
