What ho again!
Now I know to a lot of us it would be unthinkable that anyone except Fry and Laurie could play Bertie and Jeeves, but I got thinking when Ian Carmichael died about how different interpretations of the characters might work.  So, who would you like to see play Bertie and Jeeves?
To get the ball rolling, I'd like to see Colin Firth as Jeeves (http://actors.pick2web.com/pics/990988/colinfirth.jpg) because of his sterlingly stony-faced adorableness in Pride and Prejudice and A Single Man.  For Bertie, I might like his on-screen partner from A Single Man, Matthew Goode (http://img5.allocine.fr/acmedia/rsz/434/x/x/x/medias/nmedia/18/35/81/83/18817205.jpg).  He also was Charles in Brideshead Revisited so we know he can do comedy :)
Anyone?

I do love seeing Matthew Goode playing upper class twits. He's a wonderful comedic actor - My Family and Other Animals proves that much. And I do love Colin Firth too. I am very intrigued by your idea...

Unfortunately, I'm so in love with Fry and Laurie's version that it's difficult to contemplate anyone else in the roles. D:

Would never have thought of Matthew Goode as Bertie, but I believe that would work beautifully! Can't think of Colin Firth as right for Jeeves, though.

I'd like to bung another ten-odd years and the appropriate accent on to Zachary Quinto, of all people, for Jeeves.

The interweb refuses to show him in his natural state with a deadpan expression - he's always busy being sexy or evil - so here he is in his Spock eyebrows (http://parablemania.ektopos.com/Spock2.jpg) And here (http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3312555008/nm0704270) with a more appropriate hairdo.

I base my choice mostly on his general resemblance to the Jeeves I drew in my comic (http://pantheon.comicgenesis.com/wodehouse4-1.html) a few years back. He has the right shaped face, appropriate colouring and height (so he can hover over Bertie's shoulder looking disapproving) and that little pout he tends to have could be tuned to convey disapproval. Not to mention, of course, that he constantly sets off my gaydar, to the point that I wonder why the writers of Heroes keep desperately bouncing Sylar off various ladies. And I get this feeling that he really enjoys the roles he plays, which makes them more fun to watch.

I don't think I've seen Matthew Goode in action, but he looks like an appropriate Bertie to me. Though you'll have to stick him in the cryo-chamber while waiting for the Quinto to mature. ;)

I only hazard it because of the man's intimidating height, but I think that Paul Blackthorne has the certain subtlety of expression called for in a Jeeves.

For a Bertie? Harder to say.

Oo, I'll second a vote for him! I like his receding hairline.

I love Stephen but if pushed I think Patrick Stewart would make a neat Jeeves.

Nothing compares to Hugh....

Anyone else think Rowan Atkinson would do Jeeves a justice? He may put an even more comic spin on the character, but my mind keeps coming back to Blackadder III's butling. And come to think of it, that was valeting to pompous-aristocratic-good-natured-HL too, so I'm sticking with Rowan for Jeeves. Besides, I mean... prowr: http://www.filmdope.com/Gallery/ActorsA/tve666-3-43.gif

I'm among thos who would be hard-pressed to find someone for Bertie, and the only person who comes to mind is actually Simon Amstell. I don't know why. Not much of a scripted actor, but still, there's something about him that's got a Bertieesque quality. Not sure what. I may be a minority in that. But still... prowr: http://static.guim.co.uk/sys-images/Media/Pix/pictures/2008/11/07/amstell460.jpg

I could deal with RA as Jeeves. I'd definitely expect him to be able to handle the role. Wasn't sure about his looks, but I found a more recent pic (http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/showbiz/tv/964450/Rowan-Atkinson-Id-Do-Anything-Mr-Bean-to-mplay-Fagin-in-West-End-revival-of-Oliver.html) of him and I think he looks suitably distinguished these days.

All these silly young fellows look like Berties to me, they can have a jelly-wrestling match for the honour, or something. :)

Ooh, and he's playing Fagin! What brilliant casting!
(sorry, completely went off-topic there but there you are).
I think he's always had something about him where, if he carried himself a certain way, he could be either completely hideous( re: Mr Bean) or charming and gorgeous (re: BA, IMHO).

Hee, jelly wrestling match! Now that, I'd like to see.

No mere mortal man can do Jeeves justice. Stephen Fry came close, but this is Jeeves we're talking about here. Christian Bale might be able to pull it off. Maybe.

In terms of Bertie, I'd have to go with Stephen Campbell Moore, entirely on his ability to look eerily like Hugh Laurie when bunged into period clothes. (I swear that's the only reason he was cast in Bright Young Things.) http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3326/3655652472_98ae02483e.jpg

*lol at your icon*

I thought the same thing about SCM when I recently watched Bright Young Things.

I can't really think of anybody who I think would be perfect to play the characters - for me the roles would probably best be filled by unknowns. But when I saw the new Sherlock Holmes, I thought Mark Strong might work for Jeeves. No idea whether he'd actually be able to pull off the character, but he at least has a rather Jeevesy (http://movies.tvguide.com/sherlock-holmes/photos/298127/1) look (http://www.aceshowbiz.com/still/00004051/sherlock_holmes21.html) about him.

I simply adore Mark Strong. I'd never thought of him as Jeeves, though... this is most intriguing! I actually (for similar reasons) thought about Jack Davenport as Jeeves after his role in Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked in the UK) where he plays a stiff-upper-lip sort of character that bears an uncanny resemblance to my mental image of (a younger) Jeeves.

Aha! I posted a similar sort of topic (http://community.livejournal.com/indeedsir/797500.html) a while back, prompted by the thought of Fred Astaire as Bertie. This is now leading to musings on a J&W musical version... mmm.

Alas, I suppose we are talking about actors who are still alive and young and dashing... to which I simply counter with the idea of a time machine (or, you know, a TARDIS)!
