It is true. It's out there. I saw it. I touched it. No, nothing to do with the Halloween next week, I just thought to mention that the Finnish translation of the novels/short stories 'Thank you, Jeeves', 'Right Ho, Jeeves' and 'Jeeves makes an omelette' (suom. 'Kiitos, Jeeves', 'Jepulis, Jeeves' ja 'Munakasta, Jeeves') bung in one book is in the shops. Teos has started to translate all the Jeeves books in Finnish and this is the first one in the set. And here's the link to the front cover picture.

I haven't read the book yet (won't buy it as I bought two Jeeves Omnibus -books in the summer) but I took a quick peek and if my memory serves me right, they haven't translated the word 'sir' which is one thing that bothered me when I read the earlier translation of 'Most Obligated, Jeeves'. 'Herra'  just isn't as sexy as 'sir'.
I did have the time to spot one failure in the book, though. The back cover says 'Thank you, Jeeves' is the first Jeeves-novels but somehow it's after the 'Right Ho, Jeeves' between the covers. Logic, the sweet logic...

this sounds lovely! I've read a couple of jeeves books in finnish but I haven't liked the translations very much. besides, wodehouse simply doesn't sound right when it's been translated in finnish... that's why I prefer reading it in english. but I'll certainly find out what the new translations are like! it'll be interesting.

The first Jeeves books I read were in Finnish as they were only ones available when the love for the show was not enough and I needed more J&W.

English is better one to read when one pretends to be able to writes fanfiction.

Hm, I wonder if this has anything to do with the rerun of the tv series...was it the summer before last. Actually my first time watching it then too.

From what I've read of the books, I fear it might not be quite the same in another language, but...I suppose it's good for people who can't or don't want to read it in English. In fact, might borrow this sometime and read it aloud to my sister. :D

Haha..."jepulis" t-that's quite amusing indeed...X3 But I can't claim to be able to think of anything better.

Yeah, they are not the same in Finnish (or one can always hope that the translator person is really bad and mis-translates the word 'ejaculated'...)

I've checked it, and every copy in this city's library has been already burrowed, so there is people to whom it really is a good thing.

The rerun was my 'second' time of 'watching' the series but as I was very little the first time, the only thing I recalled of it was the opening.

Ahahahahah! JEPULIS? Eikä. Toisaalta, jos Bertie oikeasti puhuisi suomea niin... Täytyy heti huomenna juosta lähimpään kirjakauppaan katsomaan tätä ihmettä lähempää. Onneksi suomentaja on päättänyt jättää "herra"-termin pois, se antoi lukukokemukselle erittäin ikävän uskonnollisen vivahteen :D

Yup, the translation is sometimes a problem. In Czech version they give us simply "Yes, sir" instead of "Indeed, sir" and that´s such a shame!

(Ja hei kertokaa toki mielipiteitä tuosta suomennoksesta jos luette, en ole ikinä törmännyt missään suomennettuihin versioihin noista ja on jotenkin hirveän vaikea kuvitella, miten ne saisi toimimaan suomeksi vai saako ollenkaan. Ei löydy täältä kirjastosta vanhojakaan suomennoksia näemmä.)

Täältäpäin löytyy vanhoja suomennoksia, jos ei muuten niin äänitteinä. En kyllä ole lainannut. Pitää katsoa, kunhan saan kirjan käsiini, onko se millainen. Voin ainakin verrata enkunkieliseen, kun se sattuu olemaan kirjahyllyssä.

Mä en muuten voi lausua Jepulis, Jeeves suomeksi kikattamatta. Trimmaa aika hyvin.

Oh, I just remembered!
Couple of months ago I was going trough some antiquarian bookshops in Helsinki, and found two quite old Jeeves-books translated in finnish. (the older is from 1950 and other from 1969)
Anyway, I found the cover of the 50's edition rather amusing;

I agree, Jeeves is rather handsome in that. What a nice thing to find.

I must say, I am quite curious about the book that had been once in library here, called 'Pip pip, sir'. Finnish translation, but where/how/when Jeeves says pip pip? As that book cannot be borrowed, I guess it is old too. So people at least since 50's have read these stories! Who is the first fan, I wonder...

"Pip-Pip, sir!" on toinen niistä löytämistäni kirjoista (-69), ja minulla on sellainen hatara mielikuva että Jeeves tosiaan sanoo niin - ehkä skoolauksen yhteydessä? Siitä on jonkinaikaa kun viimeksi luin em. kirjan, kun olen keskittynyt enemmän noihin englanninkielisiin. Täytyy tutkia tarkemmin.

I wonder if the people in the 50's saw any slashy elements in Bertie's and Jeeves' relationship? :D I like to think so...

Even if I'm not active in this community, these kinds of news make me so excited!

I've read few of those earlier translations, but like Sherlock Holmes-books, they are not just any good. The translator has managed to make Bertie sound formal (ja kun kaikki vielä teitittelee kaikkia) and they don't have the playfulness of original texts. I don't think I'll buy it but I'm looking forward to loaning it from library.

Hooray for Finnish! It's such a pretty language. (Although, the extent of my Finnish thusfar is introducing myself, counting to ten, saying what colour things are, "yes", "no", and "thank you.")
