What does everybody think about doing an archive of all the Wodefic posted and linked to here?

See, this site being more or less the nexus of all things J/W, you can be reasonably confident that if it exists, it'll be here somewhere, and there's a better-than-average chance of the same for Psmith and Blandings fic, too. But it's not all neatly catalogued in the memories, or anything, so a lot of the people who're new to the fandom get stuck slogging back through months and months of old posts. I know several people got together a while ago and gathered stuff over at indeedsir_posts, which has often been my savior when looking for something, but that was in (*checks*) May 2005, and one or two things have been posted since. ^_^ And every time someone complains about not being able to find any J/W slash, here of all places, my heart goes out to them.

Suggestions? Volunteers to help compile a new list?

I would grovel at your feet in abject thankfulness if you were to do such a thing. I understand that del.icio.us is useful in doing nifty lists of fic?

Unfortunately I'm new here so not able to actually help digging up fic and classifying it :( - except for moral support perhaps?

Gosh, a foot-groveller. Never had one of those before. XD I've heard good things about del.icio.us but personally I have trouble making heads or tails of how to navigate it. Probably it'd be easier to stick with LJ, whatever we do.

D'you think if we split it up you could maybe take a month on the calendar here and go through all the posts made, saying "yep, that's a fic"? I don't (see below) really want to get into classifying things in much more detail than "this contains Bertie and Jeeves" but if you had the urge to help I'm sure there'd be something you could do.

I'm not that confident in my own capacity to help (I'm more a Bertie than a Jeeves on that point, 'm afraid) but yes, that sounds doable, the good old pair of eyes should be able to spot a fic from a reasonable distance :)

I would love it. I was tring to keep a running set of links, myself, but abandoned the project a while back. Also, I felt bad about linking to fics that were bad (yes, there really ARE some badfics to be found on Indeedsir) and yet bad about NOT doing so because they were posted by members and I thought all members stories should definetly be linked.

Yes, exactly. There really should be someplace to go where you can just look down the list of names and find everything written by each author, with maybe just whatever summary they'd provided. (Fortunately I don't think this fandom is particularly given to the "Memory is a blue feather in a harsh wind. m/m NC-17 PLESAE R&R" school of summaries.) It'd help out no end with the whole "is this the story? No, wait, it's another one" thing.

And yeah, I think I'd kind of prefer to have it be volumnious rather than, er, discriminating, seeing that having people left out would have the potential to get wanky. And after all, tastes differ and it's easy enough for people to go through and pick their own favorites to rec.

I'd be happy to help, though I'm only available for the next couple of weeks.

Perhaps we could set up memories? Or, if you wanted to do an archive, I know HTML and can do the layout. Something as fancy as a search engine would have to be done by someone else, though. And we'd need a site.

If nothing else, I'm organized and can categorize fic. Just let me know how I can help!

I do wish we could set up memories, as that'd be far and away the easiest way of handling it. Unfortunately the maintainer seems to have done a runner ages ago, so we'd probably have to petition LJ to do that.

Building a whole nother archive site, though, seems like it'd be more of a hassle than anything useful, as (just to begin with) we'd then have to get in touch with all the authors contained to ask for permission to reprint. Which...I'm sorry, I'm just nowhere near that ambitious.

The first thing is really just to go through the posts here month by month and compile all the fics from each, I think.

I think most of the ff.net stuff was posted back here at some point, but there's good stuff at Slash Cotillion and Yuletide, and some other stuff at by_jeeves or fryandorlaurie. It'd be good to just go through and have a look for everything - chances are if it wasn't posted here someone dug it up and linked it, at least.

Cool! Yeah, I love that initial period of scavenging for stuff in a new fandom. One of the reasons I'm sorry sadlittlelook didn't work out was that they seriously had the best. name. ever. for the disappointment at finding an end to your small fandom. ^_^

I don't know if this helps in any way, but I do the Fic List (http://www.livejournal.com/community/fryandorlaurie/31325.html) over at fryandorlaurie. And, what I did was put all the fic into a, well, list in an entry following the basic template of fic archive websites like ffn. The only big problem with doing that here is that since there's no mod, you can't link it in the info page or anything really.
Though, this del.icio.us thing might be worth investigating.

I've often thought that what this community needs is to just pull up roots and everybody move to something like 'indeedsir2'.

The trouble with doing that is that, at least in the personal journals, it makes every post you make after that seem to LJ like it's backdated, so you've got to tick off the little box every single time or you get an error message. Which would be annoying and confusing, especially to newbies. But it's still a thought, and if nothing else works we might consider that.

This is a fantastic idea. You know, I've often thought that we really need a mod, so that we can change the userinfo to link to a fic list, or do other nifty things. Could we petition LJ to hand the reins over to someone new?

I sort of fell out of touch with her (my own fault), but the mod and I used to chat a lot and she's good people -- I'm sure if you emailed her, she'd put up a link to an archive or whatnot. Her email's on the community's profile page.

But, as someone points out below, her LJ has been deleted, which means that she no longer has any power to actually do anything as mod, whether she wanted to help or not. As innocentsmith says, I'm not sure if we want a new mod or not (things are working great now, why fix it if it ain't broken) but I'm not sure that getting in touch with the previous mod would help us any. I don't think anyone here is mad at her, or thinks she's a bad person, though.

Oh, golly. That's such a bigger issue than I wanted to get into here. I think there's something about how you do that on LJ's FAQ page, but...I don't know that that's really necessary.

Yeah, you might be right. If it ain't broke, why fix it? Anyway, it may become an issue later, but for now, I agree with you that using the indeedsir_posts comm to make some sort of fic archive is probably our best bet, then we could have a link to it in a forward-dated entry at the top of this comm. Or whatever else people decide on. :)

One-- not to sound all defensive, but our mod's email address is on the info page; I'm sure she'd be happy to link to an archive if we just asked.

Two-- Okay, so back in '02 (possibly earlier; probably before or right when I finally made the leap to LiveJournal), I attempted to make a J&W webpage. I never actually finished it, but I did compile this list of links to all the J&W fanfic I could find at the time -- het, gen, slash, whatever.

Well, I'm actually currently working on saving all the J/W I can to my hard drive. I don't know about an archive, but What If, after I finish, I put a zip file on megaupload or something, and then every month somebody can collect the fics and art of that month and do the same.

Also, does anyone know if it's possible for a mod to pass off the duties to another? Because if we can get in contact with her once, it makes more sense to ask her to do that.

It's possible for the mod to add additional maintainers - but as she's deleted her account that had mod status here, I'm not sure that's it's possible for others to gain mod status without going though some livejournal bureaucracy or at all.
