The trouble with doing that is that, at least in the personal journals, it makes every post you make after that seem to LJ like it's backdated, so you've got to tick off the little box every single time or you get an error message. Which would be annoying and confusing, especially to newbies. But it's still a thought, and if nothing else works we might consider that.
