Ages ago, I was asked to do a podfic of 'Jeeves and the Dirty Pictures'. I tried, but my equipment wasn't up to the job. I've now got a laptop that doesn't make a noise like a jet taking off, a better mic, and I had the house to myself for the day. So I podficced 'Jeeves and the Niece Who Isn't' instead. No, I have no idea why I did that either.
Anyway, I've had a listen through, and I don't think it's come out too badly. I can think of worst things to spend half an hour listening to, anyway.

The more characters, the more likely it is I'll want to spend longer trying to differentiate the voices sufficiently, possibly doing it rather more out-of-order and applying some processing to my voice as I would rather not resort to doing a comedy scouse accent again! I experimented with processing on the Bertie-voice I used for this, but it took off the slightly rough edge of old-man-voice I think I just about achieved, so in the end I didn't. If, however, I was doing any real amount of Jeeves-voice, I think that processing would work quite well and would save me a lot of throat-ache.

Date: 2010-06-27 05:45 pm (UTC)I'm definitely more a reader than a listener myself, but despite what I've said, I was quite happy with how this recording turned out. There's room for improvement, there always is whatever you're doing, but the other thing you can do with audio - assuming you're recording your own work, that is - is to try to bring across the direction that was in your head. It can be easier to get across a character's emotions in how they say something rather than just what they say, and description will only get you so far - and, with description, it's possible to go too far...
