Feeling Sad

I just finished the television series version of Jeeves and Wooster and now that I have I have a question. . .

I remember reading somewhere online Jeeves destroyed the pages for Bertie in the Ganymede Club book because he had no intentions of ever leaving Bertie's employ.

I thought of this because of the fact the Ganymede Club book is so heavily involved in The Ties That Bind, the last episode of the series yet there's nothing said like this from Jeeves so I assume is was in one of the books then?
 

I really am sad I've finished this because it upped my already high opinion of Hugh Laurie and his acting (love him in House you know) even further and it gave me a wonderful introduction to Stephen Fry (and I say introduction although I have seen some of A Bit of Fry and Laurie).

I'm fairly sure I remember reading that, too - but I remember it from a fic. I'd link you, except I stupidly didn't put it in my memories and so, alas, it is lost. D:

Actually, they don't leave much unadapted. Although, it's conceivable that that they could get another full season out of what they missed (excluding Ring For Jeeves, because that book is really the black sheep of the series. Still fun, though).

Yes, that scene (http://community.livejournal.com/indeedsir/554702.html) is from the US edition of Much Obliged, Jeeves, called Jeeves and the Tie That Binds ('the ties that bind' - now that's kink territory).
I'm very much with those who dearly wish the show creators had gone with this bit of canon for the last episode.

I couldn't agree more. I've said it several times in this forum, but I'll say it again - I hated the way the ended the series and wish they'd ended on that scene.

I understand that when PGW wrote Ties that Bind (Much Obliged) he was planning on it being that last Jeeves/Bertie novel. I think at least one in fact came after it - but it does rather have the tone of settling things down, and Jeeves finally relenting and destroying those pages serves to resolve that one last difference between them and effectively tie them up in a nice happy ending once and for all.

I'd have given anything to see Hugh and Stephen act that scene.

I can't blame you because after reading it I wish they have ended the series too that way. There will likely never been two actors more suited to the roles than Hugh and Stephen were. I know I'll always them of them when I think of these characters especially Stephen when it comes to Jeeves.

They've made many allowances in the fourth season as it is, but especially compared to what so realistically might have been, it's doubly unfortunate they didn't film this now unattainable slice of bliss. (Although, 'Much Obliged' is probably not such an obviously happy tie-up without the additional bit from the US version, and yes, there was one more book afterwards).

I've always been a little uncomfortable with that ending, it seemed so arbitrary, kind of like the policeman putting his hand over the lens at the end of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

If you love Laurie and Fry together I rec the 4th season of The Black Adder. All of the seasons are outrageously funny and both actors show up from season 2 on, but Laurie and Fry are permanent cast in season 4.

I remember hearing there'd been some flack when Fry was first cast as Jeeves. Apparently the series had a fine following from an earlier production and no-one could imagine anyone doing it better. Plus, Fry was considered too young. For my part, I loved him in this series and can't imagine anyone else doing it! It's what you're used to, I guess. *wink* There's a wonderful chemistry between these two actor, even above the slashiness of the characters. They just do it right.

Wow really? I've never read the books or seen any other version of J&W but I gather Jeeves is supposed to be somewhat older then?

Yeah I have to say the same -- now that I've watched this series I cannot imagine anyone else playing either Jeeves or Bertie! LOL I am considering starting over on the series and rewatching just to keep my eye on Jeeves in the background because in the last few episodes of the series I just really started to notice how priceless the expressions on his face are!

Although the matter is not addressed in the books, Jeeves is generally assumed to be about ten years, give or take a few, older than Bertie, who's 24 when they first meet.
