I don't know if there are transcripts anywhere out there, but is it possible for yoyu to watch them with closed-captioning turned on? (Most TVs since the mid-'90s have the closed caption option in the remote's menu.) It's not always completely accurate, but I find that I catch the dialogue much better (even the words that are missing in the closed captioning) that way. I don't yet have the DVDs -- are they subtitled in English? That's probably a better option than closed captioning.

The A&E edition of the DVD's that come in the bright lavender "Complete Jeeves and Wooster" set (I have no clue if there's multiple editions of the DVDS, these are the ones I got from barnes and noble) are not subtitled. In fact, they are completely devoid of anything resembling "features"

Do closed captions really work with DVDs? I've never tried it before, that's pretty awesome.

Closed captioning should work with the DVDs. I think. I hope. :-) It works with my old VHS copies taped off PBS. And it works with my DVDs of The Sentinel (TV show from UPN), also a no-frills DVD.

As far as I know, the new release of the complete Jeeves & Wooster is simply a reissue in a slightly more compact box tas the version you own. (From what I've read in reviews of it.) I'm hankering after it BIG time. :-)

Hi again. I happened to be doing a search online for jeeves & wooster, and one of the things that came up was a site that rates the subtitles on DVDs. It gave links to the old and re-release versions of The Complete Jeeves & Wooster from England, and apparently *those* have excellent (accurate) subtitles. (Well, the original DVD release did. There was no review yet on the new re-release, but since the cover was the same and it was listed as having English subtitles, I suspect they are the same.)

I wasn't sure if you were ever planning on buying the DVD set (I believe you had rented the eps from Netflix?), but if so, maybe the UK set might be a better choice. The price is about the same (somewhere around 12 pounds), and shipping from Amazon UK and Play.com are both reasonable.

You'll need to have your DVD player set to be Region Free, since UK DVDs are Region 2, but codes or instructions to make your player region-free are usually easy to find online. And if you need it, I have a program that will make your computer DVD player Region Free.

Ah -- after scrolling down, I see you got subtitles from

:-) It was no trouble--I just happened to stumble onto it and saved the urls for myself. I'm glad you were able to get subtitles and links to transcripts! It really does help. I always found when watching Prime Suspect that I *had* to use closed captioning, because the dialogue part of the soundtrack was often overlaid with all the background noises in the scenes. Combine that with the unfamiliar accents, and I could catch about one word in ten without captioning. *g*

The funny thing is you think the upper class accents on J&W wouldn't give me any difficulty in understanding when I am used to trying to understand the general London accents on Doctor Who (so glad I can turn on closed captioning/subtitles with it) but they still do occasionally make me scratch my head as I try to figure out what was said -- well before the subtitles were sent my way that is!

It took me quite awhile of watching the occasional British program before I realized that "sussed" was actually the word people were saying -- I couldn't imagine I was hearing that correctly. *g*

Someone in this post (maybe it was you?) was saying something about the differences between Amer and Brit English; I've always heard and liked the phrase "two countries separated by a common language." ;-)

I gotta say the era slang isn't so bad for me but I can see how it would be a problem.

Yeah I talked how we in the US speak the same language as they do in England yet there are times we can't understand a word each other is saying. It's quite funny but that's what happens when your cultures seperate at some point. We share a common language and yet we don't - lol and don't even get me started about Australia either.

I'll got back and pick out what I couldn't understand. I've been renting the series so I don't have the first 2 seasons and there were a few instances where I couldn't understand either Bertie or Jeeves or both.

I'll check later and post the parts I couldn't understand.

Oh subtitles would be wonderful! Like I said I'd have to go back and watch the earlier episodes but I can tell you for the first let's say 20 minutes I was having some difficult understanding everything Bertie and Jeeves were saying in Bertie Sets Sail.

I've been watching The Full House today and I'm pretty much catching everything that's said in it.

I actually found some transcriptions here (http://www.movietranscriptions.com/browse/j/5) (scroll about halfway down) while trying to dig up a quote. But it's just the straight dialogue with nothing marking who says what or what's from what, so

sige_vic's offer will probably do you better.

I sympathise! I understand American completely now, but before I moved here I think maybe 20% of what was said in movies and tv shows went completely over my head. I barely noticed how much I was missing, because the majority of what we watch over there (esp. movies) is American, so we're all sort of used to it. It was only after living here for a couple of years I'd start hearing words that I never heard before, and getting jokes that used to pass me by.

However, it's not really practical to suggest that you go to live in England for a couple of years until the dialect sinks in, so here's a couple of alternative that might help you out a bit.

You can look at Wikiquote - they don't have full transcripts, but they have an extensive number of quotes from each episode for you to read.

If you by any chance understand Russian, you might be able to navigate the Russian Wodehouse Society's website, where they do have a transcript of the very first episode. I came across it by accident when searching for a quote. I don't know if there are more transcripts on the site or not, but if you click around, you might find something! I noticed they also had the complete lyrics to all the songs featured in the series.

It's funny that while I know there are some differences between the English we speak here in the US and what you speak there in England it's still the basically the same langauge. You'd think we'd be able to understand one another better than we do sometimes lol.
