I don't know if this movie has been mentioned before, so sorry if I'm saying stuff that's already been said - but since it's New Year, it's worth mentioning.

If you want a nice New Year's movie with Hugh Laurie, check out Peter's Friends - he's not the main character, exactly, but his acting is awesome. I understand that the movie isn't everyone's cup of tea - though I love it, personally - but it really is worth watching for Hugh Laurie alone, especially if you're trying to write a story with a more sober, sad kind of Bertie Wooster, and have nothing but the grim Dr. House to turn to for inspiration. When this movie came out it was the first time I saw him as a non-comedy character. Most of the time when a comic guy does a more tragic role, I can't shake off my former image of them and keep expecting them to say something funny - not so with Hugh Laurie. He was just heart-breaking.

Just through I'd throw that in. You've probably all seen it, come to think of it.

I agree that this is a good flick. Maybe not something I'd buy on DVD, but it was worth a Netflix. Fry is in it too, but you're right, Laurie outshines everyone else.

Love Peter's Friends. Has one of my favourite all time lines it in. When Emma Thompson's character Maggie tries to seduce Peter with the line "Fill me with your little babies!"

How could he pass that up?

I adore this movie!!! It's one of my faves and I watch it every Christmas. It's so full of energy, both poignant and fun at the same time. Lovely, lovely movie.

I'm bad. I've not seen it yet. Despite actually having got my hands on it. *slaps self*

I do hear it's not nearly as bad as people want it to be (for people, read: evil things who don't like Fry, Laurie and/or Branagh and therefore dislike by default), and I will watch it someday. I mean it, I will!

Do not delay! It's a lovely film. Very beautifully shot, too - the landscapes around the grounds of the house where most of the film is set, and there's a very brief shot of a naked Hugh (but he is "covered up" so don't get too excited). :D

And credit too to Imelda Staunton, who is absolutely brilliant in this film.

I'll try to control myself X D

Imelda Staunton usually is, though, unless I've been very lucky with what I've seen her in, but good to know : )
