Movie rec for Hugh Laurie fans
Jan. 2nd, 2009 09:08 pmI don't know if this movie has been mentioned before, so sorry if I'm saying stuff that's already been said - but since it's New Year, it's worth mentioning.
If you want a nice New Year's movie with Hugh Laurie, check out Peter's Friends - he's not the main character, exactly, but his acting is awesome. I understand that the movie isn't everyone's cup of tea - though I love it, personally - but it really is worth watching for Hugh Laurie alone, especially if you're trying to write a story with a more sober, sad kind of Bertie Wooster, and have nothing but the grim Dr. House to turn to for inspiration. When this movie came out it was the first time I saw him as a non-comedy character. Most of the time when a comic guy does a more tragic role, I can't shake off my former image of them and keep expecting them to say something funny - not so with Hugh Laurie. He was just heart-breaking.
Just through I'd throw that in. You've probably all seen it, come to think of it.

Date: 2009-01-03 03:30 pm (UTC)I do hear it's not nearly as bad as people want it to be (for people, read: evil things who don't like Fry, Laurie and/or Branagh and therefore dislike by default), and I will watch it someday. I mean it, I will!

Date: 2009-01-04 05:04 pm (UTC)I wish I could remember what the interview was, but I remember at the time this movie came out, in Britain, someone interviewed Hugh Laurie about it and said something like 'wow, Hugh, your performance was so moving - when did you turn out to be such a good actor?' and he said that it was Imelda Staunton that brought the performance out of him. Something like that (it was - what? 15 years ago?)

Date: 2009-01-04 05:17 pm (UTC)I don't know. From what I can tell it's better than 'Girl From Rio' or 'Maybe Baby' in spite of Hugh not being the main character. I've only seen bits of those two movies, I admit, so correct me if you think I'm wrong.
