Wodehouse references have been popping up all over, from "Jeeves" dry cleaners in St Ives, to random mentions on youtube comedy videos. But I'd thought I'd share this one which I found most interesting, as it describes k9, the robotic dog in Doctor Who, as like a Jeeves. I've never thought about the comparison, but it's surprisingly apt (in certain ways).

"So, a robot dog, with a gun in his snout, a plunger in between his eyes and radar ears. Why dies he work? Well, apart from the ears, which are very cute, the voice actor John Leeson can take most of the rest of the credit. Rather than re-creating the internal monologue of a real dog, which would essentially be “HELLO! I LOVE YOU! HAVE YOU GOT ANY FOOD? SCRATCH ME! I HAVE A SAD FACE! HELLO! I’M HUNGRY! I LOVE YOU! HELLO!”, the decision was taken to make K9 a robotic Jeeves. So his is often the voice of caution, next to the Doctor’s wayward streak and Leela’s barbarity. He’s the grown-up to their impulsive teens. He’s also a very good guard dog:"

Any thoughts? I have to now wonder how many other characters are molded loosely on our favourite cerebral valet.

He plays chess with the doctor at one point and he calculates checkmate in 5 moves or something and the doctor gets all indignant. I can imagine Jeeves and Bertie doing that almost. XD

I can see it. K9's just as stoic as Jeeves can be, and despite being the adult voice, he's still capable of being just as clever as Jeeves too. Was going to say about the chess game he plays with the Doctor, but [livejournal.com profile] imshi covered that one : ) I was really pleased to see him be clever and having good ideas when he popped up in New Who in series 2. Tin dog he may be, but he's a really cool tin dog.

There was a butler called Jeeves in Fable 2. And odly enough, that was the game that introduced me to Stephen Fry. :D I had no idea who Jeeves was at the time though, nor Stephen xD

Here's a little clip if you are interested :)

Now I can only picture Jeeves acting in a guard dog capacity...

The Czech literary character called Saturnin is obviously Jeeves. His master is slightly different from Bertie, though they have a lot in common. Not many people see the resemblance to Wodehouse though.

I'm pretty certain that Jeeves has been the inspiration for just about every unflappable valet/butler/manservant character created over the last 90+ years. I always think of him when the Jarvis character shows up in the comic strip Monty (http://www.chron.com/entertainment/comics-games/comic/Monty/11212/2011-12-03.php), although the kid he works for doesn't resemble Bertie in any way (aside from being generically rich).

I've also wondered if Miss Pettigrew (of Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) was inspired by Jeeves. I've never read the book, but the movie certainly made me think of a genderswapped Jeeves and Wooster story!
