Fanart for "Jeeves and the Midnight Raid"

Once again I've been experiencing a Jooster art slump. The only remotely clear image that's come to me was of a scene from the fic which just wouldn't leave my head, so I gave in and drew it. It's the part where Jeeves and Bertie walk arm-in-arm through the snowy streets to the diner for breakfast.





He moved at something slightly less than his usual shimmer as we walked to the diner. I offered him my arm, given how icy the sidewalks were, and he took it after a moment's hesitation, an odd thingness in his eyes as he looked at me. The day looked like it was considering the appeal of becoming a blizzard, and snow drifted down with an enthusiasm usually reserved for small children pelting one another with snowballs. The fading bruises on his face seemed to stand out more against the cold white of the swirling snow; it was hard to see him like this without being angry all over again about how badly he'd been beaten. I sighed and tucked his arm tighter within mine. It wasn't like there was anything I could do about that now, but there was still a strong feeling of protectiveness beating within the Wooster breast.

Thank you! Every once in a while I love to do pictures crammed full of detail. I almost feel like this one wasn't detailed enough, considering the setting, but it was probably better to use restraint.

This is a bit different from your usual style, I think? It seems more detailed and real, if that makes any sense.

You are so, so talented. I love your version of Jeeves and Wooster, that they don't look like Fry and Laurie, but men from your own imagination.

Details I love: the woman in the fur coat, the way the breeze is blowing Jeeves' coat, the gray parts of the snow that have been trodden upon, the seams in Bertie's gloves and that they aren't alone in the world.

This is just so, so lovely.

It is, sort of...I think it mainly looks more realistic due to the coloring, because the drawing style isn't much different from my usual. I've been experimenting with brushes and trying to achieve a more painterly look.

I'm very pleased you noticed all the little details. :) I tried to pay extra attention to them in this scene.

Now that my sweetie has been safely deposited back in Seattle, I've had some time to actually examine this gem you created for me and I have to tell you how much I truly adore it. I love all the detail that everyone has been commenting on, but I think I particularly adore the expressions on their faces. Bertie looks very worried yet pleased that Jeeves is getting better, and Jeeves looks cautiously, thoughtfully hopeful, as though he thinks he might be seeing something he's wanted very much but hasn't dared let himself consider starting to take shape, both of which are just perfect for that scene.

I love the soft-focus way you handled all the snowfall, and the stuff in the shop windows, and the almost-readable signs in the background. You put so much work into this and it really shows. I can't express to you how much I really love this.

You're so right about the expressions, that's exactly what I was trying to get across. With Bertie there's also a bit of an "Oh, you" look for Jeeves thinking he could still carry out his duties in his current condition.

I feel like I should have put more signs and people in, since they're in a busy NYC neighborhood, but then it might've been too distracting. It's odd, the pictures I work the hardest on frequently turn out far less satisfying to me than the spontaneous, quickly done stuff, but this one actually comes pretty close to meeting the expectations I had for it.

Oh ghods, please don't feel like you had to do anything differently or more or better. This is fabulous just as it is. If all you'd done was the initial line drawing, I'd still be totally jazzed.
