I was rereading The Inimitable Jeeves today, and I noticed something a bit odd when I got to the first paragraph of "Introducing Claude and Eustace": Aunt Agatha's butler is named Spenser. Her husband is Spenser Gregson, and while she is referred to as Mrs. Gregson here, in other stories, she is referred to as "Mrs. Spenser". Say what, now? Scandalous speculations on the nature of Aunt A's relationship with her butler are welcomed.

How intriguing! I had forgotten all about that. I can't say I know what to make of it, but it does sound like a plot bunny waiting to happen. *ponders*

I'm scamused!

(slaps own knees) OH MY GOD! Aunt A, you hypocrite! I'm torn between scandal and amusment. Oh hell, I'm a woman. I can multi-task.

Ni~ce implications! lol

I would like to throw in another... Does it give any inclination of how old the butler is? Perhaps he could be an illegitimate child, named after his father and master? And Agatha kept him close in a good position rather than let him loose to later stake his claims in the family fortune?

I think Plum just likes certain names, based on the sheer number of Reggies about. I know Aunt A was married (at least)twice. I think she drove Spenser (husband 1) to an early grave, and then Bertie said that Gregson was a guy who was in love with her when they were younger, but lost out to Spenser. They married once she was widowed. I believe the infamous Young Thos. is a Gregson. At some point in time, she must have driven Gregson to an early grave, and then wound up marrying Lord Worpleston, Florence's father. UNLESS Gregson and Lord Worpleston are one and the same, does anyone remember?

We need a genealogy program for this fandom. Forget family trees, we are dealing with family wreaths LOL

That'd be Lord Worplesdon. Agatha dumped him because he got thrown out of a Covent Garden ball and taken to a police station.

Lord Worplesdon's first name is Percy, so unless Spenser Gregson is an unhyphenated double last name, they're not the same man.

We never hear how Mr Gregson died, but I'll bet you're right in thinking she drove him to an early grave. ;D No wonder Lord W fled to the Continent, with a wife like her, plus Edwin and Thomas and Florence.

Lord Worplesdon's last name is Craye, like his daughter.

I love the idea of Agatha marrying her butler! Would that marriage have ended in divorce then, or did Spencer die as well? A divorce would make the scandal even more delightful. And of course, Bertie would never actually write of such a thing, out of respect (or fear) of his aunt.

Evil Bunny...

It all comes to light when - as old men - Bertie is finally able to propose to Jeeves. But Jeeves must decline, as his Uncle Spencer was once married to Bertie's Aunt - and thus they are too closely related to wed.

*evil grin*
