What ho! I have been reading The Mating Season for the first time in several years and I noticed something I had forgotten. Does it strike anyone else as odd/interesting/wonderful that Bertie consistently refers to Jeeves' uncle Charlie Silversmith (the butler at Deverill Hall) as "Uncle Charlie" throughout this book?

Uncle Charlie has obviously given his nephew and Bertie his blessing. ;)

It certainly struck me! Despite Bertie's being kind of scared of Charlie, I think he views him as extended family. Have you read the "Ties That Bind" yet? I love the bit where Jeeves is writing a letter to his uncle and Bertie tells him to "Give Uncle Charlie my love". XD

"I love how Bertie treats Uncle Charlie almost exactly as if he is one of his own aunts."

Yeah, respectful fear and all. Lol.

Whoops. I meant to add that I wonder how Uncle Charlie reacted when Jeeves explained the mix-up in The Mating Season - other than to be relieved that his nephew has better taste than to go for Gussie, that is.

I haven't seen anything like this before - in fact, Uncle Charlie seems fairly underused in fic - so I say, Do it!

I've always thought that it was probably Bertie's aunts that put him the the wrong frame of mind about Uncle Charlie. He apparently is a nice guy under the steely-Jeevesish-ness that Bertie ought to be used to by now. Although Bertie's own uncles were so lax, I can sort of understand how he'd equate Uncle Charlie as more of an aunt type than an uncle type.

Definitely one cozy family though.

The members of Indeed Sir always bring up quite interesting topics. Thanks for this little gem. I'd forgotten about it.
