I may be the last one to figure this out, but I was curious as to what exactly heliotrope pyjamas were. I thought it might be some sort of pattern, but it turns out heliotrope is a colour; specifically, it is pink-purple or vivid lavender! Is anyone else as delighted by the idea of Bertie in his vivid lavender pyjamas as I am?

ETA: take a look at the lovely art by [livejournal.com profile] gunitneko and [livejournal.com profile] muuskanuikkunen in the comments.

I feel silly now. I looked up heliotrope before and I thought it meant the flowers! So I was picturing like Hawaiian shirt type of thing. Vivid lavender is much more, alluring and slashable.
Thanks!

me too, I thought it was like paisley (also a flower-based pattern). oh well, it's not like weirdly coloured pyjamas aren't uncommon when they're posh/silk.

I'm lame - I thought it was just like a gold sunflowery type color.

I was just as wrong

I thought it was an old term for silk.

Ahhh... the Jooster fandom, both entertaining and informative!

I knew about the color, but I am a sort of color art dork.

Likewise, except for the art dork bit. Coral pajamas, they're PINK. ;)

I looked it up a week ago, because I was very curious myself :D Isn't it adorable *squee*

I'm wondering if Jeeves makes sure it smells of lavender too :)

I'm a little surprised that Jeeves hasn't destroyed them. He must be going soft on the young master. XD

hmmm... good point

Or maybe because they're bed clothes (and no one is suppose to see them) it's a private concession. Maybe they bring out Bertie's eyes.

Actually, his coral pyjamas would bring out his eyes better, since they're (almost) complimentary colors. Blue eyes might look nice with the heliotrope, but they'd kind of blend in rather than stand out. Maybe they bring out the gold in his hair (assuming he's blond).

I agree, though, that their being private attire probably has something to do with it.

Private attire, and Jeeves probably loves putting the softness and silk against the skin of his Bertie.

I always thought it was some sort of faded flower pattern, it never even crossed my mind that it might be a color :0 Shame on me..

It's very Bertie-ish colour, I must say :')
Here's a quick painting I did of the subject!

how lovely! Look at his hands all tucked and his feet all tucked up and he's all curled up with his hair all mussed …

The word heliotrope, for some reason, has always made me picture one of those contraptions with the two circles spinning inside each other...

So I sort of always subconsciously pictured Bertie wearing pajamas with those printed on them. XD

I think that's a lovely image, and I might picture it that way occasionally! Or maybe Bertie would buy a pair for his big brained Jeeves, who suffers in those plain, functional garments?

I also thought it to be a type of silk. Pink/purple! How gloriously camp!! :D

I know this topic is old, but I thought I would post this tidbit anywho. I was flipping through a talisman book I have ( because I like that kind of stuff) and I found heliotrope. It's a stone of Jerusalem or ... Something( I'm at school right now and can't remember) and get this: it's green with red spots.
I reassert that Jeeves would concede to the vivid lavender. It's better than green with red spots. LOL!

Really, the pajamas are his closest link to Lord Peter Wimsey, to whom he is meta-kin. They should have a gay-off with their nightwear sometime. Heliotrope pajamas versus primrose, though I don't know if Bertie has anything to match Peter's Amazing Technicolor Gayass Peacock Patterned dressing gown.

I think the world needs more nightwear gay-offs. Maybe Jeeves and Bunter could compete in the Domestic (Butch) Division.
