Title: Waking Fancy
Pairing: Pre-slash J/W (the love that hasn't quite gotten around to speaking anything yet)
Summary: Bertie and Jeeves come across something fairly unexpected.
Rating: G
Words: 424
Disclaimer: Not mine; oh how I wish they were!
A/N: First, the title is crap because I'm crap at titles. If you have a suggestion for a better one I'd love to hear it. Second, this is a sort of companion piece to/drabble having to do with another fic I'm desperately trying to write, but, like all my other projects (except, for some reason, this), that one is coming along very very slowly. Third, this is my first-ever fic and it's completely un-beta'd. It's been sitting in my computer for months and today I did some tweaking and decided to post it. Con-crit is so welcome, I can't even express how welcome it is.
“She appears to be sleeping, sir.”
“You’re sure, Jeeves? She’s dashed dusty. I would say she’s one of those wax thingummies. Or is she dead? She isn’t dead, Jeeves, is she?”
“No, sir, the lady is breathing.”
“Well. Then she must have been here a bally long time.”
“Given the style of her clothing, and that everything here seems to be rather antiquated, I would venture to guess that she has been asleep for approximately one hundred years, sir.”
“A hundred years! Good lord, Jeeves, are you sure? And you say she isn’t dead?”
“I agree it does seem unlikely, sir, but there is the amount of dust to take into account, and the style of our surroundings.”
“Do you suppose she’d like to be woken up? How do you think one would go about it, anyway? A hundred years…” Bertie mused, moving closer and peering into the slumbering face.
“Sir, if I may ask, are you familiar with the story of the Sleeping Beauty?”
“You may as well ask Bertram if he is human. I was a kid once, Jeeves; I did read fairy stories.” Bertie’s eyes widened and he hastily jumped backwards. “I say! You don’t mean…?”
“Yes, sir,” Jeeves replied, attempting to steady them both as master collided with valet. Bertie, hoping Jeeves would take no notice, took a little longer to regain his footing than he really needed, letting hands and shoulders touch and rest against each other momentarily.
“Well. Erm… I say, Jeeves, if you’d like, you could – ”
“No, sir.”
“Ah. I see. Me, then.” Bertie once again moved closer to the sleeping girl. Something in Jeeves’ eyes tensed, as if preparing for some challenge. Bertie didn’t see this, and bent over the bed rather awkwardly, looking uncomfortable and faintly ill. At the last moment, however, he straightened up, leaving the lady un-kissed. “Ah, Jeeves, do you suppose we could just let her sleep?”
“I do not believe we would be doing her a disservice, sir.” Relief was evident in Jeeves’ response, but Bertie was too relieved himself to hear it.
“I mean to say, she’d hardly notice, would she?”
“Indeed, sir.”
“I don’t exactly feel the need to be anyone’s Prince Charming,” said Bertie, but he cast a furtive glance at Jeeves as he said it. He went down the little staircase leading back to the rest of the castle, but Jeeves gazed a moment longer at the sleeping form.
“You are already mine, sir,” he murmured, too quietly for anyone but the little princess to hear.
