A late night conversation about some unusually pretty boy being a 'Ganymede', or, a male that trumps most people's sexuality, lead to an interesting revelation.

You see, Zeus was an active pursuer of the ladies, despite how Greek he was. But then there was Ganymede. And he went unf.

And, more importantly, he KEPT HIM.

And then my lovely companion mentioned how 'Junior Ganymede' always made her giggle for that reason. I started to giggle along, but then....

O_O

BERTIE IS ZEUS.

PLUM JUST TOOK THE SEX OUT.

Bertie is Zeus, Jeeves is Ganymede, Agatha is Hera, Bingo is Apollo(or possibly Eros), Honoria is Artemis, Florence is Athena, Madeline is Aphrodite, Spode is Ares, and Gussie is Hephaestus.

We might have made the whole Parthenon pantheon(edit,ty!), but I saw something shiny.

DISCUSS. MAKE TOGA FANART.

EDIT: I'm keeping 'toga' because everyone knows what it is and it's fun to chant.

Ganymede is also cupbearer for the gods. So, "Club Ganymede" really has a "handsome valet" kind of tone that contrasts quite hilariously with how Jeeves describe the place.

Also, the word "butler" comes from an Old French word meaning "cup-bearer", so there's another link.

Oh, but everyone has been young once, right...ha, suddenly I imagine a group of young valets sometime in the past (of the canon, ya know) starting a brand new club...one wonders whether they actually knew exactly who they were naming said club after, or whether one of them had just heard the name somewhere and thought it sounded approriate.

Also whether the young valets were actually handsome or just fancied themselves so... *snicker*

My Zeus, you're right!

Obviously the Jeeves-Ganymede link has been made before, but I don't think anyone's realised the links for all the other characters. That's amazing!

URGH! Aunt Agatha is Hera?? But that means she's Bertie's sister... and married to him... you can't really want that??! ;)

But she does try to break up Bertie and Jeeves, and Hera was very jealous indeed of Zeus and Ganymede, so things work out.

Isn't the prevailing stereotype that Bertie's the pretty boy? Oh well.

If you can't turn into a giant eagle, I'm very sorry for you, because few forms are more fun. You ride thermals and updrafts and you can see everything. Sometimes, on a clear day, you can see your undoing. I know I did. He was sitting on a rock and watching the sky, surrounded by a flock of grazing sheep. With eagle eyes I could see that his were bluer than the ocean below me, and looked as if they could see me as clearly as I could see him.

I've since been asked what I was thinking, and all I can say is that Eros is a mean-spirited little bugger with dashed good aim. Those pretty dove-fletched arrows of his are barbed, and none had ever hit me as hard as the one that day. I actually saw the glint of the golden shaft, but referring back to my earlier point, it's impossible to get out of the way, so you may as well stand and take the hit like a man. Getting back to the point, I didn't think. I know I'm fickle and inconstant and fall in love with a different nymph every hour, but this was different. It hurt more than any of the others, and drove me to swoop down and snatch him up so quickly the sheep didn't even have time to scatter. I was very careful not to hurt him with my claws, and he had the sense to cling tightly instead of struggling. When we landed at the summit of Mt. Olympus I set him down gently, and changed into myself again.

"...I am afraid I do not know the proper form of address for a god." He murmured.

I just grinned and took his hand. "You can call me anything you like, Ganymede."

I was going to say that yes, the name of the Junior Ganymede is so obvious, I love Plum for naming Jeeves' club that way, and also how he made a parallel between Ganymede as cup bearer to the gods, and Jeeves as cup bearer of Bertie, who is of a much higher class (Besides, you know, all the references Bertie makes to the godliness of his valet) but fanart/fanfic is such a brilliant idea! Specially because you also made parallels to the other characters xD

Have you ever checked this one: http://www.twochapstalking.com/dictionary/g_gag_to_gyve/ (roll to the Ganymedes)? It is the quickest way to get me cheered so perhaps you find it amusing too.

Toga fanart, you say?

This (http://i40.tinypic.com/nf42lc.png) was all my sleep muddled mind could come up with. Well, not all, but the rest was rather pointless on togas.

Two little nitpicks.

1. The word you want is 'pantheon', I believe.

2. Togas are Roman, not Greek. The Greek gods faff about in chitons and exomis...es.

Also--I totally noticed the Jr Ganymedes thing too, but I never thought to parallel everyone else! Bingo really is Apollo, lol.

Madeline strikes me more as Persephone, or maybe Psyche. Dahlia is totally Artemis, though, hunter that she is. Claude and Eustace are totally Hermes and Eros (both of those boys are tricksters).

lol! That always made me giggle too. I'm surprised I never saw this logical continuation of thought before. Mind if I reference this in an essay sometime? This is too good XD

Nice though that the Aunt Agatha thing is topsy turvy, with Hera always being jealous of the other women while Agatha, while encouraging marriage, pushes the other women forward. It's a nice compliment to the formula of hero DOESN'T want to get the girl as opposed to the traditional romantic plotline too.

Date: 2009-05-19 12:05 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nox-candida.livejournal.com
lmao, I totally had the Agatha as Hera thing in my head as well, but your other parallels are awesome! I didn't even think of Bingo as Apollo or Florence as Athena. Only thing, though, is I just can't picture Bertie as Zeus. lol, Bertie's too . . . I don't know, sweet, I think, to be Zeus. I had pondered writing a story, though, with Bertie as Hymenaios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hymenaios), the god of weddings, for the sheer irony (and hilarity) of marriage-phobic Bertie having to attend every wedding, lol.

Have you all taken a degree in... er... ancient whatsits or something? *checks* Greek Mythology, I mean.

This thread makes me feel like I've just emerged from the woods to venture out to civilization and seen a number of confusing things. I think I'll be going back to my cave. I should probably learn how to bathe before venturing out again, anyway.
