These quotings and discussions that we've been having are SO enjoyable! But with this sort of thing 'on the brain' so to speak, I noticed something that I had to present to the community for opinion/discussion.
I'm re-reading "The Inimitable Jeeves" (for inspiration and its handy pocket-size-ness) and I came to chapter 15 'The Metropolitan Touch', which is about Bingo Little off on another love-lorn quest where he sucks Bertie and Jeeves into the fray. Bertie and Jeeves are discussing Bingo's telegram, with Jeeves producing intelligence on Bingo's new object of affection that surprises Bertie:
'Great Scott!' I knew that Jeeves knew practically everything in the world, but this sounded like second-sight. 'How do you know that?'
'When we were visiting Twing Hall in the summer, sir, I formed a somewhat close friendship with Mr. Heppenstall's butler. He is good enough to keep me abreast of the local news from time to time. From his account, sir, the young lady appears to be a very estimable young lady. Of a somewhat serious nature, I understand. Mr. Little is very epris, sir. Brookfield, my correspondent, writes that last week he observed him in the moonlight at an advanced hour gazing up at his window.'
'Whose window! Brookfield's?'
'Yes, sir. Presumably under the impression that it was the young lady's.'
Considering how understated Jeeves is about most things, his saying he 'formed a somewhat close friendship' could mean... wow, my twisted mind wanders off into astonishing feats of slashery! Is it only me? And the butler, this Brookfield, why would he be telling Jeeves about a man lurking at his window? Oh, sure, it's good gossip, but mightn't there me more to it? Hmmm?
