An introduction, what?
Mar. 31st, 2009 03:49 pmAnd a rousing hunting-halloo to you all. I'm new to the site but old to the fandom, having been introduced a couple years back by a fellow American temporary ex-pat. living in Northern Ireland. May yet break a decade of fanfic-silence by scribbling a bit-- no other fandom has a canon so encouraging to the enterprising minds, what?-- but I mostly popped in to say hullo, and ask a few of questions as I read back through the archives.
First off, is there a working archive for the fandom yet? I'm only in 2005, and going through each entry to get my fix is indeed a project.
Secondly, is there a chronological list of the canon developments, or did dear Plum-as-Bertie write whence he chose?
And finally, for those of you who haven't thought to explore which particular tie binds Jeeves in the slashy American ending, I believe that paragon was in fact referring to the hymn, "Blest Be The Tie That Binds", written by John Fawcett towards the end of the the 18th century. It was ostensibly about the brotherhood of Christianity, but, as Jeeves was not the most observant of the holy rites, I think we can all see the what the quotation truly meant.
"The fellowship of kindred minds
Is like to that above..."
"We share each other’s woes,
Our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows
The sympathizing tear.
When we asunder part,
It gives us inward pain;
But we shall still be joined in heart,
And hope to meet again."
"...And perfect love and friendship reign
Through all eternity."
What, hymns never made you think slashy thoughts?
(The link is real, but immediately starts playing a mpeg of the hymn.)

Date: 2009-03-31 08:16 pm (UTC)I cannot answer all your questions, except one; regarding the hymn, I'm fairly certain someone recently did share that tidbit. If you're going in chronological order and have only come to 2005, you wouldn't have seen it.
*grins* I've had slashy thoughts triggered by the darnedest things, myself. I'm all for 'em!
I absolutely LOVE your icon, btw. I'm not perfect, of course, but sometimes I get so very twitchy at the mangled spelling I see online every day.

Date: 2009-03-31 11:33 pm (UTC)And sorry for the re-posting, in that case-- but if that post lacked the link, then I think we can all be well-served by the goggy eyes of the chap on the right.

Date: 2009-03-31 08:38 pm (UTC)Well, welcome to this most excellent community then *b. & s. for everyone!*
(oh also, if you you're going through all the posts, could you maybe tag some who haven't got a tag? Would be dashed helpful for when we finally get those archives working again... you don't have to, merely asking^^)

Date: 2009-04-01 12:16 am (UTC)Tagging would be so much easier if I could just lay them out in front of me, instead of scanning day by day. *sigh* And if I could bring myself to do it, I'd mark the established from the burgeoning, and which are written in which voices.
This is why I've avoiding tagging things anywhere else I exist, I'm one of those sorts who makes lists and spreadsheets of the most ridiculous sorts. Ah, well, to e. their o.!

Date: 2009-04-01 01:13 am (UTC)Huh. I always thought gen meant general fiction, as in fiction that doesn't have any romantic pairings.

Date: 2009-04-01 10:26 am (UTC)I found a definition, might as well post it then, what?
General: Also known as "Gen." Fics that are general in nature and tend to not focus on any ship, but rather on the show and the characters as a whole.
And you're an angel for wanting to tag! I've done quite a few myself, but work is catching up on me. I didn't bother to tag posts with missing icons, broken links etc. though. And if you feel you need a tag that does not appear in the taglist yet, just request it in a post.^^

Date: 2009-03-31 09:21 pm (UTC)I don't think anyone's ever made up a list of canon happenings, either, though no doubt you'd make a lot of friends if you wanted to take such a thing upon yourself. Just don't try too hard to make the timeline match up to that of the real world/publication dates, because you'll give yourself a headache and also be left wondering how people managed to be so frisky well into their seventies.

Date: 2009-03-31 11:38 pm (UTC)Archive yet? No. We have tags right now to be getting on with.
I think dear Plum kinda just wrote as he went. He writes of how Bertie and Jeeves meet much later than when he wrote about their trip to New York. Though I heartily second innocentsmith in saying that if you wanted to attempt some events thingummy many of us would be much obliged.
We can't seem to leave the tie that binds alone here on indeedsir!

Welcome welcome welcome, have some tea, pull up a chair and please don't be shy.

Date: 2009-03-31 11:49 pm (UTC)I've already started appending tags, though I'm afraid that I had hit October '05 before the suggestion was made. On a related note, what, exactly, is filk? It puts me in mind of pilfered undergarments.

Date: 2009-04-01 12:01 am (UTC)Filk is...well the word is a blend of folk and fic. Filk is music produced by a fandom for a fandom. Either the tune or the lyrics are original, sometimes both.

Date: 2009-04-01 01:18 am (UTC)Anything can be slashable (not necessarily logically, but still) - this definitely applies to hymns. When I opened the link with my current mindset and saw the crazy eyes on the chap on the right, my first thought was that he had mad unrequited lust for the rather oblivious chap on the left in the hat. (This is all just based on the pictures, mind you. The pictures, sleep deprivation, and opening it as a link from a slashy community.)

Date: 2009-04-01 10:30 pm (UTC)There's no chronology out there yet, probably because Wodehouse didn't take much care to stick to a strict time line. I did take notes on the timing of events happen wile I was going through the series, but I can see that assembling them into a coherent list would be quite the challenge. Perhaps one day I'll make the attempt.
