First I have a question to make to you: how correct a fanfiction should be historically? I started to write a fic couple days ago, then I did some background research and that pretty much spoiled the fun... *headwall* So how is it: would you mind for example that Jeeves & Bertie go around the Europe, everything is cute and sunny even thouhgt it is time between wars and there is a chap with Spode's mustache doing whatever he was doing or things like that.

And now that I'm here, does any of you know were to find the video for the Queen's song 'Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy'? That would totally make my week.

Thanks and pip pip!

I wouldn't worry about it too much, honestly. The novels are set in Christie Time anyway; it can be interesting to incorporate real historical information, but Wodehouse's novels really weren't grounded in the realities of life in the interbellum period to start with.

Or, alternately, just keep them out of the Weimar Republic.

Someone else can correct me, but I think I read somewhere that Wodehouse wrote his Jeeves stories without regard to world events. In fact, he was writing them in the early 50s as if nothing in England had changed since the 20s. Disregarding current events is fine, I think, as long as they don't sneak in the story without being explained.

Hey, I'd read it.

Well, Wodehouse himself wrote the stories with happy disregard towards things happening in the world. His 'universe' is often described as existing perpetually in the cheerful post-war period, and I don't see why fan fiction writers should be forced to change that.

Re your first question...in that instance, personally, I'd prefer at least a hint as to what was going on historically at the time... It's not so much that I necessarily expect Lots Of Doom And Gloom as a must, more that making no reference/subtle gesture towards at least acknowledging the political climate would make it appear (to me) as if the author hasn't even stopped to consider said historical environment, or is wilfully ignoring it - both of which would jar for me somewhat.

But, I stress, this is just my opinion. :)

As long as there's good fic, I really don't care : ) Wodehouse certainly didn't, now did he?

as others have said, it's not necessary in this fandom to be 100% historically accurate. and if you're too far off the mark , like jeeves becomes an astronaut or something, you can always label the fic AU.

See this? *holds up history book*

This is what Wodehouse taught me. *dumps it in the rubbish bin*

There. *dusts off hands*

You know, I sort of ran into the same thing with the (endless) fic I'm in the process of writing. Finally I settled on keeping the geopolitical stuff to passing-if-any mentions and painstakingly researching the social/cultural details (seriously, half a day on laundry alone). I would get a bit twitchy if the era-generic culture were just tossed out the window, but I view the inclusion of Real History™ as fully optional. Probably it would have been quicker for me to point at the other responses and go "what they said." Ah well.
