Aug. 29th, 2004 11:01 pmI've posted all the drivel I wrote on my journal. In retrospect it's a pretty shabby piece of scribble when I couldn't get near a computer at night this past summer. Even I am bothered by my loose use of verb tenses to denote present happenings and flashbacks. Also, anima_mecanique, completely agree with the ridiculous of the situation of having to walk a Persian cat....But dash it, I had set my mind on having a cat and the walking part bit just came out. I'd appreciate it if anyone can give it the once over, though I would be cautious to read too carefully into the tenses and even the plot sequence since it all makes very little senese.
Am currently happily reading away The Mating Season. I love how animals are always so fond of Bertie.
"The door opened, Sam Goldwyn came bounding in and flung himself on my chest as if we had been a couple of lovers meeting at jouney's end"
--Hee, Sam Goldwyn is Corky's dog @.@
"Ignoring the cat, which was weaving in and out between my legs with a camaraderie in its manner that suggested that it had now got me definitely taped as God's gift to the animal kingdowm of Wimbledon..." :)
And,
"'Well, wouldn't you turn your face to the wall if you were trapped in a place like this with everybody thinking you were Gussie Fink-Nottle and without Jeeves to comfort and advise? Oh, hell! Oh blast! Oh damn! Why couldn't Jeeves come? Is he ill?'"
I wonder what kind of 'comfort' Bertie is thinking about since it is known that Bertie often consider Jeeves to be a dashed unsympathetic fellow (verbally anyway) and have often expressed annoyance with Jeeves' byline, "Indeed, sir?" :)
Lastly, *SORRY!* did anyone else detect a hint of slashyness between Esmond Haddock and Gussie AKA Bertie? Bonding over port indeed.

Date: 2004-08-30 09:22 pm (UTC)I love how utterly lost poor Bertie is without Jeeves. Makes one wonder how he managed with the previous valet...I do remember Bertie describing Jeeves as having a sympathetic air about him, but it was usually when he was serving up hangover cures and in that condition pretty much anyone will look sympathetic.
Speaking of animals, I was in a used bookstore a few hours ago and they had a "Wodehouse Beastiary"...i.e. a collection of excerpts from Wodehouse books that feature animals. I didn't have any money on me to get the thing (blast!) but I did read the introduction, which was full of copious praise for Plum's keen observation of the domestic animal kingdom...*L* I always liked how he described the dreaded Aberdeen terrier as having a sanctimonious look...they really do, it's peculiar. And I also appreciate Bertie being a bit of a cat fancier...

Date: 2004-08-31 03:33 am (UTC)Are there more details on any of Bertie's previous valet other than they stole socks from him?
Sounds like a fun book. But then, Wodehouse has such colorful phrases anyway. I'm greatly saddened that they didn't make us read this stuff in high school Lit; it would have saved many nights of agonizing over empty text purporting to be meaningful and symbolic. Wodehouse makes no such pretenses and is all the better for it.

Amen to that...Wodehouse would do wonders for the terminally cynical. The pure ingenuity of his writing is simply breathtaking. It doesn't NEED pretensions -- it's beautiful all on it's own.
I can only remember the previous valet being mentioned in "Jeeves Takes Charge," and the only facts we recieved were that he used to steal socks and that he "had flat feet and used to clump" (as opposed to Jeeves' noiseless tread). Enigmatic, what?

Date: 2004-08-31 03:25 am (UTC)It was a cat of rather individual appearence, being black in its general color scheme but with splashes of white abut the ribs and also on the tip of its nose. I chirruped and twiddled my fingers, as its my custom on these occasions, and it advanced with its tail up and rubbed its nose against my leg in a manner that indicated clearly that in Bertram Wooster it was convinced that it had found a kindred soul and one of the boys....
Cats who know me well, like Aunt Dahlia's Agustus, will probably allude to my skill at scratching them being the ear.
I scratched this one behind the ear, and it received the attention with obvious gratification, purring like the rumble of distant thunder.
I am VERY fond of Bertie :)

Well, I thought so anyway.
Also, EEE! for Sam Goldwyn! I adore the names Wodehouse gives all of his pets. Bartholomew, Augustus, *G* brilliant.
*NEEDS to find The mating Season*
