Aug. 20th, 2004 09:39 pmLittle question. Were Bertie and Jeeves' ages ever mentioned?
I mean, Bertie's somewhere in his twenties, obviously. But Jeeves? I've seen the most diverse things. Is there anything in the books?

He might have been one of the better-class ambassadors or the youngish High Priest of some refined and dignified religion. His eyes gleamed with the light of intelligence, and and his finely chiseled face expressed a feudal desire to be of service." This, if you are unfamiliar with tRoJ, is told to us by a third-person narrator, and so can be relied upon as Plum's opinion rather than a character's. Bear in mind that High Priests would generally be older, so I usually interpret "youngish" as meaning that he is at least in his forties.
Pass it around.

That book isn't the best; Plum was trying something different, to see if Jeeves could survive without Bertie to narrate him. My reviews are mixed, mostly negative. It's good so far as comic novels go, but no J/W chemistry?! Please!
It's weird to read, too, because I think Plum finally let some modernity creep into this one. I believe there was a television. ::shudder::

Date: 2004-08-20 09:21 pm (UTC)Is it a pre-Bertie story then? One of Jeeves's former employers, I mean. Because I've actually been wondering about that. He's let a couple of things slip about former employers of his, but am too much of a novice at this (and too pigheaded to read any translated books) that I never did found out if a story was written about it.

Date: 2004-08-20 09:29 pm (UTC)I'm sorry, that very nearly had me spraying soda over my keyboard.
Now THAT I would have loved to have read. Bertie learning to be independant and Jeeves-less. Must've been hellish for the poor chap!
What does Jeeves do then, if it won't spoil the entire plot. Just stay behind to look after the house or what?

Date: 2004-08-20 09:37 pm (UTC)Jeeves *did* surprise me in this one, though. He dresses up like a skanky bookie to help the guy.
