Same basic discussion question---in your imagination, what kind of a lover is Bertie?

(Waits with much amusement for the answers! If only final exams were really this much fun...)

Probably a little clumsy, but what he lacks in technique he makes up for in enthusiasm.

I'd guess quite shy and bumbling, in a sweet way :)

I think he would be generous and adventerous, an intrepid explorer, but a bit in need of a guide, much as he is in life.

At first he would probably be a bit clumsy and bumbling, but once he got the hang of it he'd be playful, generous and sweet. Since Bertie loves all the good things in life, he would probably be an expert at initiating sex in imaginative ways(not the first times obviously, but once he feels comfortable in the relationship).

He would totally be the kind of guy who'd creep up behind you while you were doing the dishes and kiss you. :)

I suspect that, at least with Jeeves, he would be under the illusion that he was in charge, and dominant, and that Jeeves would continue to let him believe that, topping from the bottom, as it were.

Bertie would be enthusiastic, but the kind where he'd charge in, and then be clueless, but try his best to bluff (badly), and when Jeeves takes over, he'd be secretly relieved. He'll figure it out somehow, but when he does, he'll be more than happy to share and enjoy. Everyone happy from the encounter, and Bertie'd be a happy man. :D

But yes, a playful lover, and physically demonstrative. I could see him snuggle Jeeves as long as Jeeves wasn't doing anything potentially dangerous.

Oh, I agree with most of the previous comments. Clumsy, but enthusiastic.

I can see Bertie attempting to set the mood for special occasions—oyster dinner, rose petals strewn on the bed, candles—and disaster striking. (“Jolly good thing we had a bottle of champers on hand to douse the fire, what?”)

Wouldn't champagne fuel the fire? Now that I could see happening. But Jeeves would deftly smother it, and then whisk Bertie away from the damaged bed and into his own inner sanctum, which would be decorated in a similar fashion in anticipation of the eventuality of disaster at the hands of his employer(only with more safety precautions, plus he would deposit Bertie directly on the bed, not giving him a chance to jostle anything on fire on to anything flammable).

*snerk* No, champagne doesn't have a high enough alcohol content to catch fire. Neither does any kind of wine. You need hard liquor for that...most range from 40 to 90 proof, and you'd need something on the upper end...brandy's the classic choice, for christmas puddings and whatnot. (There was a mindbogglingly bad episode of "Smallville," once, where a villain tried to set a tied-up Lex on fire using wine, and I couldn't. Stop. Laughing.)

The images I'm getting for all this are friggin' hilarious, though. XD There would definitely be wacky comedy involved in Bertie's love scenes...

How do you KNOW all that?

Er. I cook? And drink? And I used to work as a sommelier? And...well, it's pretty simple science, isn't it? I mean, you wouldn't expect beer to catch fire, would you? Wine isn't that much higher proof than beer, really. It's still mostly water and fruit that's involved there.

D'you know how alcohol proofs work? It's basically just percentage of pure alcohol, doubled. So, like, most wine is around, oh, 20-25 proof, which means it's about 10-13% alcohol. Not nearly enough to catch fire. It'll boil, or evaporate.

There is, also, of course, my career as a mad bomber/arsonist. But I prefer not to speak of it. *looks around herself suspiciously* They're watching me. I can feel it...the ducks...

The episode from... I guess it was Season One, though precisely which one and on which girl I couldn't possibly tell you... comes to mind. Given, it was a complete setup for face value, but I don't imagine Bertie being much different when the actual situation arose (except that he'd be more "into it", as it were): all fumbling, awkwardly grasping limbs, sort of putting on this air of knowing what he should be doing, but ultimately not. Still, he'd be super enthusiastic, a word I notice surfacing quite a lot in these comments (and rightfully so!)

Probably more charming than we would give him credit for, if he ever settled on anyone. Jeeves, however . . . I was just thinking the other day how madly skilled that man must be. The mind does so much more than the hands or the . . .well, other bits ever can.

Then again, just to add to the Laurie camp, I've often thought House had to be fantastic. That time he said in season one, in a fit of anger, that he needed a woman half his age, I just wanted to stand up and say, "I'm half your age, damn you!"

Thank you for being on my side. It is always a little lonely here, but I wouldn't want to sit anywhere else. (Kill Bill joke, sorry.)

I can't actually see Bertie as a completely clueless virgin; not with men, anyway. If he was gay or bi, he'd definitely have some experience: Bertie would have been sent off to a boys-only boarding school from 7 or 8 until 18, and then gone up to Oxford or Cambridge (still with single-sex colleges at the time, I think) so he'd definitely have come across man-on-man action at some point.

I still think he'd be hesitant and a bit unsure in bed, but just because that's a big part of his personality. I think he'd be very puppy-ish, though; lots and lots of honest affection and devotion, and quite energetic.

I also think he'd be a total sub, at least for Jeeves. He's so used to following Jeeves lead and doing as he's told, that would naturally spill over into the bedroom.

With some of the physicality that Bingo Little has with Bertie in some of the short stories, I always suspected they had a certain something going on at school. Of course, the fact that Michael Siberry looks rather hot/adorable and looks good with Hugh only adds points to the Bingo/Bertie theory. :D

I think he still has a teddy, too, which Jeeves just chooses not to notice when he makes the bed every morning. Not that there is a DAMN thing wrong with a teddy. Some very respectable composition instructors that I know in their early twenties still sleep with a teddy bear . . . and some of them might be named Goblin :)

I'm sure that he's a very enthusiastic, if somewhat clumsy, lover -and maybe naïve, at least in the beginning. He might be a virgin. One think I like to think about it is that he's less interested in the sexual aspect, and more in the emotional one. To me, Bertie's definitely an emotional guy, who cares more for love and tenderness and cuddling than mere sex. I see sex as an addition to the whole thing.

It's a lot like the courtly love of olden days, I would think, for Bertie. Very much about wooing the object of his affection with his prowess, and when he falls short, Jeeves can be there to patch him up and play doctor (an interesting reversal, compared to House!). The romantic gestures would mean more.

Thank you for pointing this out, [livejournal.com profile] alinewrites!
