Hah, this is the kind of stuff you learn when you major in classics. Once you get past declensions and the Gallic Wars there's all sorts of smut to be had. Educated smut.
It IS a pretty, highbrow name, I suppose. But one that makes most people who know mythology immediately think of gay. Most peculiar ^^
"And then through the doorway there shimmered good old Jeeves in the wake of a tray full of the necessary ingredients, and there was something about the mere look of the man."
I wonder myself. Ganymede has been pretty much synonymous with homosexuality for a long time -- I remember him cropping up in a Hogarth etching in just such a capacity.
'Course, 'catamite' is hardly the word for Jeeves. Jeeves Takes Charge, after all.
When I heard on the DVD episode that was the name of the club (sad to say, I watched a few episodes before starting to read the books), I sort of did a double take and was like, "Um, Dad, the GANYMEDE club?" And he was like, "well, Stephen Fry IS gay..."
*cough* Can I be really horrible now and say that I didn't even know that? I own 'Wilde' (just watched it yesterday, actually), but I didn't know whether he was gay, or just playing gay. Should've known, though. Every one of my obsessees turns out gay at some point or other. *L* Silly me for thinking I was entering a safe zone watching Wodehouse.
I feel like I should have watched "Wilde" at some point in my life, but I haven't. Will definately have to check that out. Man, you've got to respect someone who's played both the flamboyant poster boy for the Decadents and someone who will use every means short of actual physical violence to prevent his employer from going out in purple socks.
You know, I can't think of a single name for a valets' club that's as appropriate as "Ganymede", despite the gigantic homosexual connotation. Hm.
"Flamboyant poster boy for the Decadents" -- I like that. *L*
The film is not entirely accurate, but I have fallen head over heels in love with it. Got a whole love/hate relationship going on with Lord Alfred Douglas now, it's horrible. *G* But Fry as Wilde. Seriously, it's absolutely perfect. You do need to see it. I've been pimping it all over the place while I was in America.
Hmm... okay, I'm thinking now about the name. I'm thinking, let me think. Hebe did the same, but she's obviously ruled out. (Though it'd be wonderful if the Lady's Maids could all get together at The Hebes Club.)

It's not just me -- Ganymede's name is where we get the word "catamite."
Wow, I've been haunting this community really closely lately. Hee.

I feel enlightened... and slashy. Slashily enlightened. Which is always a good thing to be.

Well... It's canon.
