Earl of Towcester (pronounced "Toaster," P.G.W. informs us) required Jeeves's temporary services while Bertie was at a class on learning to do for one's self, which he was taking to provide moral encouragement for an impoverished friend who was taking it out of necessity. The class taught former gentlemen of leisure how to cook, look after clothing, keep house, and otherwise do without the services of a gentleman's gentleman. Jeeves went back to Bertie after Bertie was sent down for bringing in a "ringer" for the sock-darning contest. ("The Return of Jeeves.")
