I like to toy with the idea of how my favorite stories would play out in different settings (fanfic reader, duhdoy.)  In particular I like the way different stories can be adapted to different time periods, like BBC's Jekyll or Sherlock, or any time someone puts Dickens or Shakespeare in a different time period.

It seems to be harder to do, or at least less common, with comedy than with drama or horror.  Some stories are so entrenched in their time periods it seems impossible to imagine them at any other time.  One of my favorite movies is 1966's The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming! about a small town that falsely imagines that it is being invaded by the Soviet Army.  (If you haven't seen it I highly recommend it.)  I love trying to find ways to update that humor to a 21st century, although I haven't found a good way so far.

As for Jeeves and Wooster- while we don't have the same type of servant class anymore, in this decade especially there is still a large disparity between the upper and lower classes.  A Bertie-esque character could easily be reimagined, a sort of goodhearted male Kardashian.  A Jeeves character would be harder I think, and how the two wold interact would take some polished plot writing.  But I think it could be done.  Even if not under the exact guise of being a modern-day Jeeves and Bertie, but a kind of spiritual heir.

Anyhow.  TLDR; do you think a modern day Jeeves and Wooster setting could be convincing?  How?  Why or why not?  Any other period stories you'd like to see updated?

They DID wind up going into the present in a fic I wrote, largely because Jeeves was fed up with having to be in the closet. it's a crossover with Dr. Who, want a link?

You should link it just so I can read it again with a minimum of effort. XD

Easy peasy: Jeeves as personal assistant. Lots of people have PAs who live with them and do everything. No different than a valet. :p

I recommend checking out Joe Keenan's books (Putting on the Ritz, Blue Heaven and My Lucky Star). They're very much about that disparity between classes, as well as being a really fun reimagining of the whole setup. The sort-of-Jeeves-ish character is a female friend and the Woosterish character is gay. Most of the troubles of the main character are the result of a certain friend's scheming to win money and/or status and/or the lurve of the smart set - kind of a Bobbie Wickham character. All three main characters are as near to penniless as you can get as an aspiring playwright/musician in New York. Some of the people they hobnob with are in many cases quite disgustingly rich and in some cases do have servants, as well as image consultants, bodyguards and occasional rent boys... I just wish Keenan would write more of these books, but I guess you can't be an award-winning writer, executive producer, Hollywood whatnot AND prolific generator of comic fiction.

I have the beginning of a modern-day AU percolating around in some old hard drive where Jeeves identifies as a houseboi and gets emotional and in some ways sexual fulfillment from doing domestic chores and whatnot. Bertie is just a trust fund baby with an old-fashioned family who don't like him being gay, and Jeeves finds him drinking alone in a gay bar after a nasty scene with the most recent girl they've thrown at his head.

Otherwise, I'd say Reginald Jeeves, Super PA. The spear counterpart to Pepper Potts.

I loved The Russians are Coming!, too! I found Alan Arkin to be sexier than the young, blond guy.
