"I always used to think that publishers had to be devilish intelligent fellows, loaded down with the gray matter; but I’ve got their number now.All a publisher has to do is to write checks at intervals, while a lot of deserving and industrious chappies rally round and do the real work. I know, because I’ve been one myself. I simply sat tight in the old apartment with a fountain pen, and in due season a topping shiny book came along."

That is a quote from Leave it to Jeeves.
Of course, we know that Bertie is referring to the Children's Book of American Birds - but what if (having once become a publisher) Bertie kept at it. What if, in fact, he fell into financing and publishing...ahem... gentlemen's literature. Possibly even gentlemen-with-gentlemen literature. If you get my drift.??

So my bunny/question is:
1) What titles do you think Bertie might publish ( or have published, if you are the historical research type)
2) Would Jeeves know? Might he even help?
3) Who might be on his list of writers? Does Rosie M. Banks write erotica in her spare time?

I adore this plot bunny! It makes me think of Bertie as some kind of publishing underworld figure, trading in illicit gay erotica. Rosie M. Banks would absolutely be part of it - it's clear from the stories that her books are that era's Harlequin Romances, and it's such a short step from "legitimate" romances to steamy gay porn, isn't it?

Maybe Jeeves would write or just eagerly devour the output? He and Bertie could edit together, and in going over the works, sexy times ensue.

I've actually read a wonderful story with a somewhat similar plotline, except it's Bertie as the author of rummy fiction. It's one of my all-time favorites from J&W fandom, called "Jeeves and the Literary Gifts" by triedunture (http://archiveofourown.org/works/365059). Plot summary: Jeeves gets his mitts on some Victorian fiction of a rummy sort and it is SO good he must find the author. Now who do you suppose that might be?

I do like that one.

But (as such things were mentioned in passing in the story) I sort of like the idea of a follow-up or something with Bertie trying his hand at writing Holmes/Watson slash fic illicit erotica and trying quite hard to keep them in character better than the *ahem* specimen in his collection. Clearly this is not at all an attempt on my part to make somebody write something where Bertie Wooster writes slashy fanfic.

As far as I know, Holmesians have practically been slashing the characters since The Dawn of Time. (Not that ACD made it difficult.) Okay, I don't know THAT much about it, but I seem to think ages ago I read an article or something about old fanfic from Ye Olden Days, even before Star Trek and zines.
