What ho! I was perusing Amazon, and I found a book that may come in handy when it comes to fic research: Queer London : Perils and Pleasures in the Sexual Metropolis, 1918-1957. I haven't read it, though I hope to soon. I'm wondering if it will address my suspicion of those Turkish bathhouses Bertie occasionally mentions.

Ooh! Just added that to my Amazon wishlist. If/when you get it, please let us know how it is.

Here (http://www.guardian.co.uk/gayrights/story/0,12592,1253033,00.html) is an article with the author. Now I just have to wrack the brain meats to remember where I heard the phrase 'unusual temperament' before.
And, here (http://www.press.uchicago.edu/Misc/Chicago/354601.html) is an 11 page excerpt from the book, which I think you might find interesting.

the british laws on raiding places normally go along the lines of 'because we can do it if we think there's something suspicious/loud music/etc going on'. A tip-off can be on pretty much anything, as long as they can drag you down the station for it. Potentially causing an affray can cover almost any behaviour.

And no, the UK has never had alcohol-banning laws. Alcohol-selling times, yes (try googling 'licensing laws') but these don't apply to private clubs, since they're not actually selling it. Nearly all the clubs Bertie went to were private ones, which you pay a subscription fee of some sort to.

Oh, the uk has laws that can trample over nearly every single human right you can think of. It's fabulous. One of our treason/terrorist acts is so draconian that that the founder of apartheid loved it, but didn't think he could get it passed due to probable public outcry.

Though I tell a lie about the alcohol. There are a couple of drinks banned - absinthe, for instance, was against the law to be served for many years during the 20th century, mostly because it can kill you, though that's been repealed since. However, the most they can do you for is selling when you don't have a licence to and importing over the legal limit.

Most normal ones then, as now, would have been surpiciousions of drug use on the premises (Dangerous drugs act came in 1921),acohol illegally being served (to minors or outside of the licensing hours), or prositution. Also occasionally causing a public nuisence or having entertainment without a license. sorry I'm late to this party.

Oh GOD we need a fic with bathhouse!Bertie. This is a general appeal; would any public-spirited author answer the call? :)

(Thanks for the rec.)

Oh! From Premiere Magazine, some time ago. They had the best series of pics of all four: a Reservoir Dogs photo (which I had to cut Sean out of, to make it square), one of them all dressed casual and doing something like a conga line (!), same outfits but doing silly kungfu poses, and dressed slightly like the Beatles, walking across Abbey Road. Want me to post them for you?

And the same photographer (I believe) did some very cool black suits/skinny black ties/white shirt photos of Elijah Wood and Liev Schreiber for Everything is Illuminated.
