Weekly Drabble challenge
Aug. 17th, 2012 08:58 pmRules:
1) A drabble is, by definition, a 100-word story therefore all responses should be 100 words exactly, no exceptions.
2) You may also choose to respond to this challenge with a five-minute sketch.
3) PLEASE put the word DRABBLE at the top of your post. That way people can easily spot the drabbles in amongst any reader comments they receive.
RATING: I don't think this should be limited so reader beware that they could be any rating (you could put it in the subject line if you feel it needs it)
PLEASE try to remember to make each drabble a comment in response to the original post. That way, if the comments start to collapse, the drabbles themselves should remain visible.

The settings the thing - Brinkley, Totleigh or the Drones if you must - but even better would be a new place.
Your place, your favourite place, a far-flung place, an odd place. As ever the choice is yours :)
Please tag for me. Ta.

Date: 2012-08-17 11:31 pm (UTC)“Do you ever have a song just stick in your head for days, Jeeves?”
“Sometimes, sir.”
“Oh.” Bertie pressed his arm against his lover as they were in public. “That’s a rather uncanny-looking goat, Jeeves.”
“Indeed, sir?”
“Don’t use that soupy tone, Jeeves. I wanted ‘Pirates of the Caribbean.’ Rather fruity, what? Or the ‘Haunted Mansion.’”
“I thought that peace and unity were preferable to rapine and plunder. Forgive me, sir.”
Bertie watched as the little dolls danced rhythmically, singing about one moon and one golden sun. The water sloshed eerily.
“Jeeves, these dolls are scary.”
Jeeves sighed, pressing back.

Date: 2012-08-18 04:18 pm (UTC)“It’s a world of laughter…” Bertie sipped his pineapple drink, humming. The next bit still scared him. “It’s a small world after all….”
“Sir, please,” Jeeves looked deeply embarrassed.
“No, you must wear your mouse ears. I had them embroidered ‘Reginald’ specially.”
“These parrots….”
“We will see the ‘Enchanted Tiki Room’ and the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and that’s final.”
“Perhaps the ‘Haunted Mansion’ instead?”
“No, it has bride beazels.” Bertie shuddered. Jeeves pressed his arm, sorry he had mentioned the ride that showed the world. “I booked the world tour.”
“Sir?”
“We leave Friday.”
“I... thank-you, sir.”
"You're welcome."

Ahem. Enjoying, well done, moving on.

Date: 2012-08-21 01:44 am (UTC)A chill wind whistled eerily through what once would have been the central nave of the former abbey, now just a hollow shell. Bertie stood by the crumbled remains of a great pillar, looking pensively towards the waves crashing beneath us.
I imagined he was bored, longing to be back in the warmth of the hotel rather than exploring this ruin. My interest in the place had been mainly due to having read Dracula as a lad but the abbey itself was compelling.
“It’s sad, isn’t it? Beautiful, but sad.” He said, quietly, taking my hand whilst echoing my thoughts.
AN: Whitby (in North Yorkshire, not Canada) is probably my favourite place in the world, aside from my home county, so I wanted to make Jeeves and Bertie go there. They are visiting St. Hilda's Abbey which, like all the other abbeys in England, was ransacked during Henry VIII's reign. It is also where Dracula dies in the Bram Stoker novel. Here's what it looks like today: http://www.leopalmerphotography.co.uk/whitby%20abbey.jpg (Bertie expresses my feelings on theplace :D)

Date: 2012-08-23 10:32 pm (UTC)"Indeed, sir."
"Not in the safari pamphlet, as it were."
"Indeed not, sir." There was a distinct soupy tone.
"You don't speak the local stuff by chance, do you, Jeeves?"
"I'm afraid not, sir."
I shifted uncomfortably against the tight ropes and there was a metal clang as my foot bumped the side of the man-sized pot. "Never thought to be in the literal soup, Jeeves."
"It seemed unlikely, sir."
"Surrounded by spears."
"Indeed, sir."
"Got a plan forming in that fish-fed brain, by chance?"
"I am sure something will occur directly, sir."

Note: This is pure crack, but I couldn't resist. My first J&W writing experience, so I apologize if my Wodehousian is rubbish!

Date: 2012-08-25 10:14 am (UTC)...and I want to read "that thing" you were writing. :D It's surely more polished than mine (and I just can't picture it being awful at all); I feel like my Wodehouse voice needs a lot of work. And really, we need lots of fic with Bertie and Jeeves in Africa, right?

Date: 2012-08-27 04:42 pm (UTC)I started (and nearly finished) a novel-length series of fics in which Jeeves flees to Africa (with a blasted beazel, of all things) because he can't face the truth of Bertie's feelings for him... cue epic, life-threatening jungle adventure for Bertie, who goes to track him down. Only, it didn't quite turn out nearly as entertaining and edge-of-the-seat as I had hoped.
If you are still so inclined... the series begins here: http://number-six-a.livejournal.com/1121.html You'll find the rest under the title Hidebound and Reactionary at the same journal :)

Date: 2012-08-27 11:04 pm (UTC)Quite possibly we should start a movement to increase Jeeves-and-Bertie-in-Africa fic. We need lots more. ;)

Date: 2012-08-30 03:53 am (UTC)I think stories never quite turn out how we envision them in our heads, for better or worse, alas. You should definitely finish it though. *has completely altruistic motives* Though if it so dissatisfies you, rewrites are always an option..? I haven't had the chance to read it yet, drat it, so can't put forth a decent opinion, but I can't imagine it's anything but delightful.

Date: 2012-08-23 11:02 pm (UTC)"Yes, Bertram," he said firmly, if with a note of regret. Said note spoke volumes to me and I felt a pang of guilt.
I held baby Peter a little tighter. "So where's this Kingdom chap? If he's going to adopt a Jeeves he should have the decency to be prompt about it."
"Like most small towns, Market Fishborough has a strong network of communication—"
"Gossips, you mean."
"Indeed. He's likely having difficulty slipping away."
I hoped he never showed up.

Date: 2012-08-30 05:41 am (UTC)Beaming with 'joie de vivre' and expensive French champagne, Bertie leaned in closer to half shout into Jeeves' ear, "This Victor chappie can certainly belt out a snappy tune, eh, Reg?"
Jeeves' lips quirked amusedly and he turned his head to reply in a more modulated tone, "She is quite talented, Bertram."
"See here, old fruit, although he looks like a she, Victor, despite being introduced as Victoria, actually is a man."
Shaking his head very slightly with a fond little smile, Jeeves squeezed Bertie's hand, partially just because he could here. "As you say, my own, as you say."
(Yes, our chaps are visiting the night club from Victor/Victoria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Victoria))
