I wish I knew. I suppose some people just find him terribly annoying, but I don't see that as a reason to beat anyone up. I really think Bertie is just very much misunderstood and that people tend to attack what they don't understand. Bertie is a unique personality and this probably has a lot to do with it. He never seems to be quite what anyone expects of a chap of his station. This, of course, is what charms us as readers, but I'm sure it alienates the people in his actual social class and circumstances. "Dim but sweet" doesn't really seem to go far in a lot of places.
