Is there more of this that I've missed? It's strange for me to read it, really, because it's distanced from London and yet, at the same time, not. The stories I heard from my south-london family are mostly rather jolly. Wasn't it funny how Aunt Rose used to hide under the stairs at the slightest hint of an air raid and would do anything to get someone else to do her fire warden duties? What about that time Uncle Bert heard the pub had beer during an air raid and decided to go out, only to have a bomb land on the common - which was being used as a gun emplacement - just as he opened the door, and end up on his bum half way down the hall? What about the toys the german prisoners made for local kids out of old tin cans?
Then again, I know that really it wasn't. There was the night Gran (who isn't my gran, long story) spent on the factory roof with the others watching and cheering at what they thought was german planes flying over their heads then being shot down, but which turned out to be doodlebugs. She lost the chap she was engaged to, people in the area lost their homes, an uncle's ship was torpedoed, a bus crashed due to the blackout...
