Bertie Wooster opened the heavy wooden door of the Hitchens Pub and Eatery and found his nose assaulted by the many varied smells that seemed to go unnoticed by the patrons within the establishment. Doing his best to not pull the neatly folded handkerchief that was in his pocket, he put on his best smiled and found a young lad who appeared to be a sort of maître d'.
“Table for two, lad.” The boy simply looked at the
“It’s open seating.” And the boy scurried off to continue whatever it was he had been interrupted from.
Seeing the questioning look on his master’s face, Jeeves spoke up to explain that one was to seat one’s self where ever one cared too.
“Ah, very well then. Let us sit near a window up front here.”
“Very well sir.”
A young man similar to the first they had encountered but a few years older came and placed two menus on the table they had chosen. Jeeves felt slightly uneasy sitting so casually with his master. After so many years in the employ of Bertie, a sort of routine about their eating habits had emerged. And never once during all those years had the two of them dinned at the same table, not even with in the walls of their shared home.
“Wha’ll it be gents?”
“Well old boy…”
“A few moments, if you don’t mind?” Jeeves interrupted Bertie before he could go any further. “Do forgive me sir but I think it would be most wise to take a moment to study the proffered menus before placing our orders.”
“Ah yes. Right as always Jeeves.”
When the server returned both men had decided upon the beef wellington and bread pudding with salads to start the meal. Plates gently placed in front of them, Bertie was pleased that the meal order was, while not quite up to snuff with what he was used to, indeed most stomachable.
“Splendid meal Jeeves. Whoever the duce recommended this place to you was bang on regarding the quality.”
“It was my niece sir.”
“Your niece you say. Hadn’t the faintest that you had one. Thought you had a couple of nephews, what?”
Jeeves motioned for the check. “Indeed. My sister’s youngest, Marie. She runs the cottages in which we are staying.”
“You don’t say! Planning to visit her while we’re hanging about?”
“She shall be far too busy to visit with me sir. After all she is running the business single handedly.” The check was placed on the table while Reggie explained and pulling a billfold from his jacket pocket he prepared to pay for the meal. With no objections from Bertie, the necessary bills were left with the check. “Now if sir is most confident in returning, I shall try to find the grocer of which Marie spoke and do the shopping.”
“Oh yes. Very good. I’m sure I can find the way.”
“I won’t be long sir.”
Jeeves headed off in the direction of the main thoroughfare while Bertie simply stood forming a plan to meet the Jeeves offspring. It wasn’t till an impatient patron behind him told him to “Move it, pal” that
While the old Jeeves was peculiar about social classes mixing, Bertie couldn’t see the harm in simply popping his head in the office and offering a quick “Hallo” to the girl. And so he headed for the office which was located in the middle of the circle that formed the street. A bell tinkled as he gingerly opened the door.
“Hallo?” giving a quiet cry to test the waters. “I say, is any one about?”
“Be with you in a moment.” A brunette head popped up from the stairs, which Bertie assumed led to a room underneath. There was a clacking of clay pots as the girl finished whatever it was she was doing.
“No hurry. Just stopping by to say hallo. Well, hallo. I’m off.” The
