The gleam of humor in his eye, if that is the phrase I'm looking for

Seriously, though, there is a particular phrase I'm looking for.

In one of the books somebody (possibly Spode or Tuppy?) has threatened to beat up Bertie, and Jeeves and several other people (maybe Stiffy?) are continually asking Bertie if Spode/Tuppy/whoever had a "gleam of humor in his eye" (or something like that) when he said it.

I can't remember the exact phrase, only that was funnier and funnier every time yet another person asked Bertie the same question using the exact same words.

Help?
