closetofheroes.livejournal.comHello all,
Lurker for the past few months (apart from a few reviews, that is). I'm British but have lived in the US for 8 years, and I've been a Jeeves fan since I was about 12 (mum made me read them!). I've also been a big Fry/Laurie Blackadder fan since about the same age, so when mum told me that they were going to be playing Jeeves and Wooster back in 199-whenever it was, I remember shrieking with joy. What can I say? I haven't actually read all the books yet, but I've always been a big fan. In the summer I generally read a Jeeves/Bertie novel, and this year my husband got me to read the whole thing aloud to him (in several installments). Involving someone else somehow put the Jeeves/Wooster bug well and truly up my nose, and I've suddenly gone from being a warm fan to an obsessed fan. I've satisfied this obsession by cranking out bits of fan fiction and of course reading all the fan fiction I can lay my hands on. I little knew that I'd find others out there as obsessed as me.
So, introduction over.
Now, a question. I've been writing a little fiction of my own, and while I don't hope to get things perfectly accurate historically, I do want to be consistent with the culture of the time.
What I want to know is, what was sex like in Britain between the 20s and the 40s? Did people 'date' in the sense that we date today? If you'd been courted by a gentleman for a while, could you expect things to get sexual, or would that be strictly after marriage only? Would the same apply to the middle classes as to the upper classes? I find it so hard to believe that people were really virgins until they got married.
I welcome speculation, but if anyone actually knows something about this period, I'd be so grateful to learn. Or, if anyone has any source that might give me more information to recommend, that would be great too.
Thanks so much to everyone in the community, especially the fic writers.
Toodle pip!
