I'm on a bit of a Douglas Adams craze lately. Ahem. I knew DA was a fan of Plum (the "PG Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever' - Douglas Adams" on nearly every one of my Wodenovels would be a slight indication of the fact, as well as the similarities in writing style), but I was reading some of his old posts on his alt.fan newsgroup.
Q: You ever read any science fiction yourself?
A: “Hardly ever. At least I hardly ever finish an SF book (including ones I write.) The way I see it is this: if it's less good than something I might write it's a waste of time. If it's better it makes me depressed. If it uses an idea I was thinking of using then it prevents me from using the idea. If it uses an idea I've already used it makes me feel ripped off. Where's the pleasure? I'd rather read PG Wodehouse.”
( And then THIS sweetness about Stephen just pushed my Adams Adoration past the field of fannishness and into the sea of squee. )
And with Stephen now voicing the Guide, I mean, I'm just overflowing with love for all things British and funny right now.
