I'm not chiding anyone or anything, BUT--

Am I the only one here that isn't a fan of the more slashy qualities of J&W? As in, they never screwed! Period. ?

Just curious, really. Fans seem to really enjoy that aspect.

Rock on. ♥

I never particularly saw them as a slashy couple, but I can certainly see why others do it.

I just love me some Jeeves and some Wooster, so it's all good. :)

I don't necessarily think of them as slashy, but I'll take them anyway they come:)Where is the quote in your icon from? Inquiring minds need to know.

Not for the J&W slash either. I just love the characters and I love Laurie and Fry's portrayal. The series is so silly but just so much fun. :-)

Being inordinately silly, I was going to reply to this post with something along the lines of; "But... but... isn't this a slash community? I'm so confused!" until I glanced over the userinfo again and found that it actually isn't – certainly not exclusively, at least! Ah, well, you learn something new every day! (I expect real-life communities like the official P. G. Wodehouse society would have a far smaller proportion of members interested in the slashy aspects, but that's a whole other kettle of fish!)

Personally, I love both slashy and non-slashy interpretations! Looking at it either way has its own appeal, and I alternate depending on my mood! Fickle, perhaps, but enjoyable!

I like slash with Jeeves and Wooster and I like non-slash, either way. The one (http://www.quillsandink.com/fiction/viewstory.php?sid=1048) Jeeves and Wooster story I've posted was gen, though like the originals you can always read your own interpretation into it.

My personal idiosyncrasy is that I don't care about Fry and Laurie. I don't dislike them, but I'm not wild about them either. So I just skip over people enthusing over them.

I like that Wodehouse can be read with different reader intents: sometimes, I'm in a slashy mood and it just jumps off the pages of canon texts; sometimes, I'm enjoying it for just that inimitable Jooster thing that's totally not about the slash; sometimes, it's a bit of both. Whatever strikes my mood.

Fanfic-wise, I think I prefer overt slash because that's a possible Jeeves-Wooster relationship aspect I can't get from canon. But that doesn't mean I don't read gen. (Haven't seen any het fic, ever, now that I think of it. Hm. Curious.)

...as for Fry and Laurie, I'm in it for the Fry. Anyone who can look totally natural whilst using words like "comestibles" in a sentence is teh hott in my book. ;)

You're definitely not the only one, but seeing as this community was co-founded by two slash fans (*cough* one of those would be me *g*), it's natural that you're gonna see a lot of slashy posts.

Heh, I had forgotten this wasn't specifically a slash group. :)

Still, given the amazing quantity of 'coincidences,' I've almost become convinced that Wodehouse may actually have intended that we should understand that they were screwing like rabid weasels behind the scenes. He'd never be so indelicate as to admit that up front, especially since his career as a popular writer would have been done if he had. I can see it now: "Collaborated with Nazis AND writes gay porn!"

And regardless if they never screwed, they're still a pair, and remain so throughout all the stories, while all of Bertie's girlfriends quickly drop by the wayside.

See, I find it hard to believe that Wodehouse inteded everything we read into it. But I do think that he was probably aware of how it could be read; considering his close friendship with Cole Porter, I would be very surprised if Cole didn't point out the slashy bits to him.

I'm not very big on the slashy elements either, but I have no objection to them. Some of the fics are pretty good.

I actually didn't *get* Wodehouse until I was into slash. I'd read him, but he left me cold. Now, postslash, I can quite happily read him straight- my enjoyment isn't dependent on the slashiness... but yeah. It's helped.

And see, I just think that, if he had a sense of humor anything like my Eor's, well... even though Eor is not the least bit interested in slash himself, he'll play up things that he knows I'll like, and if Wodehouse WAS close friends with Cole Porter, he might have had a fun time putting in little things to amuse his friend, even if he himself was not all that invested in writing gay characters.

I loved Wodehouse before the slash, and I've no doubt I'll love him after the obsession has died. I think the slash is helped by Fry and Laurie being the only adaptation I've seen - if I'd always thought of Jeeves as significantly older than Bertie, I think the slash wouldn't have fitted so well. For me slashing J&W adds a lovely dimension that makes the whole dynamic even better, Bertie even more squishily huggable and Jeeves more The Hot, but it's still A1 fabulousness without that.

I saw a Jooster het fic once. It was NC17 Mary Sue(OC) porn. I think it damaged me for life. So, don't get *too* curious like I did. ^^

Well, the way I see it, good slash ought to reflect the tone of the canon--and in the world of Wodehouse, even hetero-sex doesn't really exist. Just sighing and pining and giggling and being stuck with someone at the breakfast table for the rest of your life, for better or for worse. In that sense, Bertie and Jeeves can't possibly be screwing in my mind--the mental film just doesn't roll. However, it does seem clear to me that, whilst Bingo Little and Tuppy Glossop and the other Drones consign themselves to marriage, all that our heroes really want is homosocial domestic bliss around the Jooster breakfast table, where "Rally round the young master" means "I can't live without you, Jeeves," and "Very good, sir" signifies, "Oh, you silly ass, I love you too."

If *I* can see the slashiness, then it's got to be obvious, because I'm not teh perceptiff, but I also think you're right about them not having sex ever. I kind of see them as Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins -- a perfect pairing, but not sexual at all.

Bertie and Jeeves might fall into this asexual category -- maybe because of what [livejournal.com profile] zipudding said about the world of Wodehouse not really including sex, but also because Bertie is goofy and Jeeves is always perfectly composed -- but I think at some point Bertie and Jeeves realize that they're meant to be together forever, but not in a necessarily romantic way, just that each has found his perfectly Platonic soul mate, I guess. (basing this on the TV shows, not having read the books. I really need to do that someday....) Anyway, I like the slash, it's fun, but like you, I really can't see them getting sweaty. Ever. :-)
