You so totally get this... i see that I should have been more clear (or asked you to beta, because this insight is so excellently helpful)...
...it's sort of the point, isn't it, that Bertie attracts these brainy women who then get a bit odd? And she's already acting weird at the beginning, because she's carrying a bow (not hers)
So, of course, Athena would not know what to do and try to act like Aphrodite or a nymph...but she has these clear little moments when she realizes that Bertie isn't smart enough for her. And because Bertie and Jeeves are narrating it, they show her in a bad light--Bertie because he is scared to death and Jeeves because he is annoyed.
I couldn't figure out how to get Ganymede in there without annoying Jeeves... does bear some thinking about.
