You are right about the depiction of Athena, of course. In this story, she's a really kind of awful melding of Stiffy Byng, Madeline Bassett and Florence Craye--with a good dose of "Serena" from Bewitched thrown in for comic value. I think part of it is that Bertie just brings out the worst in intellectual females. The other thing to think about, of course, is that she is more than 2,000 years old and her father is still controlling her dating life, which could make anyone act rather immature.
