Delurking for a Minute

I have been seriously lurking here for some months and I've got to say you have some quality writers here. I see there are some escapees from Lord of the Rings fan fiction, who are excellent writers. I live to read fan fiction, but now I have something to contribute.

I just obtained a book called "Gay New York, Gender, Urban Culture, and the Making of the Gay Male World 1890-1940. It looks very interesting and I can't wait to dive in (I can picture Bertie during his stays in New York), but I thought I would give you a taste of it:

"Gay men developed a gay map of the city and named its landmarks: the Fruited Plain, Vaseline Alley, Bitches' Walk. Even outsiders were familiar with sections of that map, for the "shoals of painted, perfumed... mincing youths that at night swarm on Broadway in the Tenderloin section... the parks and 5th Avenue".

If you are interested, I can post more.

Ooo... this sounds very interesting, and having just been up in NYC a few weeks ago, near and dear to my heart. Would love to see more.

This is such an excellent book! I had to read it my freshman year in college and it was an eye opener. It definitely presents a more multifaceted view of the past than the standard 'pre-Stonewall was unlivable' picture. (Which isn't to say that's entirely wrong, just that the book is nice in how it presents the living and working contradictions of the situation.) Also, there are pictures! Yay!

I've read a couple Gay New York books before, but this doesn't sound like one of them. Yes, more, please!!

I have read this. But I think I'm going to go get from my campus library again next week.

I have this book! I've barely had time to read it, though. I should get on that...
