Even if the guy does secretly love her, it's still unbelievably bad advice! If it was at all typical for the period, then no wonder Bertie thought women were crazy.
this woman wrote in saying her bf liked to go to strip clubs and she was really creeped out by it. The columnist gave her what I thought was the worst advice possible, which was for her to go to the strip club with him. Guaranteed to make her, her boyfriend, the other audience members AND the strippers uncomfortable.
I think one of the worst ones I've seen in recent memory was in a parenting magazine, where a woman had written in to say, "My mother is too hard on my kids. I wish she could be a doting grandmother and spoil them a bit sometimes. Is there some way I can diplomatically ask her to be nicer?" To which the columnist basically responded "You're only saying that because you wish she had spoiled you. You should just be grateful she didn't turn you into an entitled little brat by being all 'nice' to you when you were growing up. You and your kids should suck it up! >:( "
Looking back, it strikes me as a very Aunt Agatha sort of response. Yeesh.
