(no subject)

The article [livejournal.com profile] bertiebwriting posted has dashed my hopes of seeing the Dennis Price and Ian Carmichael version of Jeeves and Wooster (no fault of hers, of course!). Since my chances of seeing even that one surviving episode are decidedly slim, I decided to go to Youtube to see if I could at least get some idea of what the fellows had sounded like. What I found was this: The opening titles of World of Wooster.

I've seen Ian Carmichael play Lord Peter Wimsey and that was more believable than him as Bertie, I think- although sound wise he does a great job reading the audio books.

Man, it's a pity only the one episode survived. I would have liked to see this :(

Yes, I have a very clear recollection of these - I adored Dennis Price as Jeeves and have a nasty tendency to sing the song at odd moments, too. You may be interested to learn that Ian Carmichael is still, at 87, turning in the occasional performance as Bertie Wooster on radio and in audio books. IMHO he is a national treasure, one of the last of the great generation of post-war comic actors.

Because I had such fond memories of that show I was very reluctant to entertain the Fry-and-Laurie interpretation at first, but soon came to the conclusion that they were ideal casting. And, thank heavens, there is no danger of any over-zealous production company throwing away the original tapes. We have at last learned to value the artefacts of popular culture!

<3! Too bad there isn't more-I would have loved it... It's weird tat we complain about how much we don't know of our past, and yet we throw such recent treasures away...
