Offering

Hallo there!

I have two things.

1. I was wondering - since the Jooster Archives seem to be down, and have been for some time for me, could I offer something?

I am reasonably adept at organizing things, and I enjoy the work that comes along with putting together Master Posts that contain links and summaries of fic as well as author names and other information.

I understand that this would be quite the undertaking - seeing as there is a lot of J&W stuff on the web, and that there will be more in the future, but I would like to try.

So, in short: would any of you object if I attempted to put this together? Also, would anyone be willing to help?

2. I am remembering something from way back in the [livejournal.com profile] indeedsir archives, and I can't find it. This is greatly distressing, and if I could have your assistance, I would appreciate it.

The post was a discussion post, and in the comments there was a great string of comments about the idea of abusive!Jeeves. I mean abusive!Jeeves in the sense that he would injure/verbally abuse Bertie - not pleasant, but fascinating. I personally adore the idea of dark!Jeeves, and I'd love to read those again. (And, perhaps, fic? Who knows?)

So! If I could have your input, readers?

I don't know about n°2, but I give you a big ol'cheer and hurray for the n°1! I'm not sure if I can spend full time helping, but if there are any small tasks to be done, I'd be delighted to assist.

Hey! I think (in regards to point number 1) that's it a great idea! I've been thinking how I miss having the archives and how convenient they were. And if the project does get going, I would definitely love to help. I have a lot of stuff mem'd and I've been thinking how I really want to be able to contribute something to this great community. So yeah, I would love to help! :)

lol, I don't have too much of a preference, though e-mail might be a little easier for organizational purposes. :)

i don't know if i could really help with a project like that, but i would like to offer this. if anyone needs a place off eljay to host their fic, essays or whatever, Pen and Pages (http://www.pensandpages.net/efiction/index.php) is a good place to do it. it's run by a friend of mine and it's where i host all of my fic.

i know a lot of fic has gone awol since the archives went down. if anyone wants to re-upload their fic or just archive their fic there as well as other places, it would be awesome to have more jooster at pen and pages.

no problem! :)

[identity profile] storyfan.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
This is where I first found your work, and then that led me here. Pens and Pages loads easily which is something I like, and it's beautifully organized.

[identity profile] waqaychay.livejournal.com 2009-04-23 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
that's what i like about it, too. it's very easy to use and not at all image-heavy. the only problem i've had with it is that sometimes after you upload a story, the page goes all wonky. but that goes away if you refresh. so, really, i highly recommend it.

I... would have to be restrained from glomping you if you did that archive.

Organization would be awesome!

While I think the idea of an archive is fabulous, I remember there were a lot of issues with the previous 'archive' (namely that most of the links went out of date within a couple of months of it going online). If it's at all possible, this fandom could really use an actual archive, that stories could be uploaded to as a central location for them.

Which of course, is a best case scenario, but I figured someone had to say it:)

I have webspace. I keep meaning to put the alt.drwho.creative archive back up, but don't due to arsedness failure. You could use that server if you want.

[identity profile] random-c.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Remind me if you want to do it and I'll have a word with the bloke whose box it is.

[identity profile] random-c.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
a) Nope. b) linux c) nope, but if you have a look at www.panatropic.net on the wayback machine you can see what I did with it... My coding skills are a bit out of date, but I could look at bringing them up to scratch. At least with my code you're guaranteed accessibility...

[identity profile] random-c.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah... my code's all a bit late-90s to be honest. CSS, what's that?! But I was writing a site that had to be accessible to a guy using a DOS browser, so...

[identity profile] random-c.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
However, I believe the machine is currently a LAMP box, so there's rather more scope for what could be done. Creating a site that lets people upload their own fic should be fairly trivial, and the organisation of it could be flexible as well - using user-defined tags, say, with signed-up members able to add new tags to other people's fic as well. Shouldn't be much more work to add the ability to add pictures as well, even embedding them in the fic.
Ut would have to be database driven, but that shouldn't need to be too large, just store the fic file location and the metadata, and it would need a certain amount of moderation to prevent people tagging others fic unfavourably, but this is a friendly fandom so I wouldn't expect too much trouble with that... get the feeling I thought about this a bit when I was thinking about bringing the old archive back? What stopped me there was that I'd have to re-input *everything* and check the authors were all still OK with being archived, and there was a LOT of stuff there.
I've not done any PHP in an *age* but hey, how hard can it be?

[identity profile] random-c.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Indeed, the hardest part with any archive is getting the fic in there. Making it a community effort makes it a lot easier. I took the alt.drwho.creative over from someone else, and was putting in up to 8 hours work a night on the thing and still couldn't keep up. I tried recruiting helpers to pre-sort the stuff so all I had to do was code it, but there was a limit to how much help they could be. Every fic had to be manually added to every page it was on. However, autogenerated tag-based sorts, with account-holding readers able to add new tags as well as the authors adding tags when they upload makes it all a lot easier.

...Just adding my voice to the chorus of support for your archivey ideas :-)

Any archiving would be great. Should writers send a list of stories with links to you at some point? Would that be of use? I'm going to be helping chaoschick13 with a Jooster project at some point, too.

OBJECT? Seriously?

"Hi, I'd like to make your life easier and more Jeeves-filled because I'm awesome like that. Anyone mind?"

NO.

[identity profile] ayamemishi.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I have a collection of tags on my delicious account that pertain to Jeeves and Wooster, and I'll be happy to share them. :)

[identity profile] juliacarmen.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for your archiving!

The only abusive!jeeves fic I can think of is "Jeeves and the Evil Twin." And it isn't quite what you asked for.

I...I think I love you. HUZZAH! :D

[identity profile] thirstyrobot.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 03:19 pm (UTC)(link)
1. AWESOME.

2. Do you mean this silghtly eye-watering thread? (http://community.livejournal.com/indeedsir/166262.html?thread=2488694#t2488694) And this one (http://community.livejournal.com/indeedsir/161545.html) seems to be a slight continuation.

Not that I'd say no to either, but nothing required. I take a twisted librarianish joy in finding information for people.

[identity profile] niektete.livejournal.com 2009-04-20 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Just want to say, I'm decent with XHTML/HTML, so I could lend a hand if stuff needs coding, linking etc :)

[identity profile] emeraldreeve.livejournal.com 2009-04-21 04:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'd cry tears of joy to have my fics. archived!
