I agree, (stereotypical) valets, especially in Wodehouse world, are impressive but not fat (especially if they climb trees and beat up policemen lol) while butlers are solidly, comfortingly fat (but in a stately, impressive way, not a 'jolly' way). I think the extra notches in the belt are an honor that comes with age among servants for Plum.
