Classic Wodehouse Illustrations, Part 8: "Scoring Off Jeeves" + "Sir Roderick Comes to Lunch"

Ok, this is my last one of these before I go off on vacation. Since these two stories are so closely related, I figured I'd just bundle them together.

"Scoring Off Jeeves" was published in Cosmopolitan as "Bertie Gets Even."

So that's why he's always depressed.

Noooo, Old Jeeves! That's Skidmore!Bertie! He'll never recover!

Meanwhile, in The Strand, Bingo's in love again, and it's one of the greatest things I've ever seen:

Derp!

I love how Bertie is recoiling ever so slightly.

Oh, Bertie, when will you learn:

Bertie's got this one.

Taunting him will only anger him further!

Let's meet Honoria:

Hotcha!

She really does look like a goddess! Maybe not a tender one, though.

Oh. My. God:

Chim-chimeny . . .

Skidmore!Bertie is wearing full-on Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins attire. My life may be complete. Well, almost . . . all I need is a reaction shot from Mills!Jeeves.

But then, disaster strikes!

HALP!

You should have listened to Angry!Jeeves! Now look what you've done:

I like the hair.

Oh dear.

Here's a positively beautiful painting from Skidmore. Argh, why must he be so technically brilliant, but so profoundly unable to grasp the characters?

I do like his Bingo.

----

"Sir Roderick Comes to Lunch" was published the next month in both magazines, and both of our dear illustrators seem to have been fascinated by Sir Roderick's rather magnificent head. But before we get to that . . . more Agatha!

Bertie and his flying potatoes.

Bertie flings the spuds in alarm. I like how even the chap in the portrait looks concerned.

In Cosmopolitan, it was published (for some reason) as "Jeeves the Blighter":

Glam!Agatha strikes again.

Ah, more Glam!Agatha. And Honoria is looking far too dainty there.

I cannot express how much I love this image:

A trifle roomy . . .
Skidmore's Sir Roderick does a bit of the old soft-shoe:

Puttin' on the Ritz!

Jeeves really looks like Dr. Smith in that picture.

Cats in the bedroom!

Millions and billions and trillions of cats!

Skidmore didn't even attempt the cats. I guess that imagery was just too wacky for him. Instead, he fixates on Sir Roderick and his hat:

Noooo they be stealin my hat!

Scarred for life

Poor Sir Roderick!

Finally, a fitting note to end on: the most d'awww-inducing Mills image ever.

Even Angry!Jeeves looks happy!

:D

Hope you all have a topping holiday!
