Title: Ways Where It Didn't Work
Rating: G
Pairing: J/W
Summary: It doesn't turn out happily.
Disclaimer: I own nothing.
Notes: I fixed my typewriter, put on depressing music, and wrote. Yes, I know I'm going to get shot.
Warning: Angst. Lots of it.
---Bertie admits first.
“I’m – I’m sorry, sir. I do not reciprocate your feelings, sir, but I do consider you a trusted friend.”
It is a crushing moment. Bertie’s face falls, tears well up, and it’s all he can do to keep from pulling Jeeves close. Jeeves is the one who helps him, of course, and the tentative hug breaks Bertie’s heart all over again. “Don’t…don’t leave me, Jeeves.” Is all he can gasp out between forcing back sobs. He may be hurting, but he will not cry.
“I will not, sir, unless you ask me to.” Jeeves may not love his employer, but he certainly cares for him. He would not abandon him.
Bertie hates it, hates knowing Jeeves doesn’t return his feelings, but he is glad Jeeves won’t leave, and the simple, platonic embrace hurts him, as it soothes him.
He gives up, and cries unashamedly. Jeeves understands.
---
They carry on, as always, and Bertie gives up on hiding his feelings. Jeeves doesn’t talk about it, but
---Different places, different reaction. Jeeves goes first.
It’s the end, of course, and as Jeeves picks up and leaves, Bertie regrets telling him to leave and never come back.
He shouldn’t do this, he shouldn’t react like this, but Aunt Agatha looms in his mind, society makes it’s mark, and Bertie simply tells Jeeves to go.
It would never work out, after all.
---Different places, different reaction. Jeeves admits, again.
“I love you, sir.” Jeeves admits quietly, and all Bertie can do is stop and stare at his valet.
He doesn’t quite return said feelings, but he begs a night to consider, with a promise that he won’t be firing Jeeves.
Jeeves lets him go, and the tea the next morning is the same.
Bertie sips the tea, looks up at Jeeves, and sighs. It is not the news he wants to deliver, but he just can’t pull up any feelings, other than the brotherly feelings he already has.
“Sorry, old chum, I don’t quite return said feelings, but stay, Jeeves. Stay.”

There doesn't seem to be a lot of angst in this fandom, so thanks for giving us something that we don't get a lot of. :) Viva la difference!

Date: 2006-09-25 05:56 pm (UTC)You have broken my heart!!!!!!
Repair it with a nice little fuzzy fic about REQUITED love.
And I'll then forgive you.
Extra points if it has angst followed by happiness.

Date: 2006-09-28 02:59 am (UTC)(Thank you! I have found some angst in the fandom, but nothing that really, really hurt, but I'm not sure if it's a good or bad thing that I added to that small pool. Please, do hunt for the happy!fic. Or read the original stories. Those are good cheerful things. ;)

Date: 2006-10-01 08:53 pm (UTC)Bertie brokenhearted is so sad...beautifully angsty, if angsty is the word I want (which it is, even if it's not a real word).
Thanks for sharing this.
*wipes away tears*
